First some news…
A major winter storm is still impacting Beaver Island through March 16, 2026 and into tomorrow morning, with heavy snow, strong winds, and blizzard conditions. Travel is dangerous due to blowing snow and wind chills below zero.
Federal relief for Northern Michigan, announced by Reps. Fairbairn and Cavitt, will support recovery efforts after the 2025 ice storm. The relief will help local utilities repair infrastructure damage, reducing the financial burden on ratepayers. We are in another major storm right now and waiting to see the outcome.
The NLMIC (Northern Lake Michigan Islands Collaborative) winter 2026 virtual meeting covered updates from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and other collaborators. The meeting included discussions on proposed deer regulation changes, vegetation mapping, fire history reconstruction, and land acquisitions on Beaver Island. The group also discussed the National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program and various action items, including finalizing the Beaver Island state wildlife research area forest treatment plan and coordinating surveys and inventory of the newly acquired Double L Ranch parcels.
Josh Cohen presented on the Michigan Natural Futures Inventory, highlighting vegetation mapping and culturally significant species. Derek Hartline discussed the “Setting the Straits on Fire” project, focusing on fire history reconstruction using tree rings. Caitlin Donley presented on recent land acquisitions and conservation easements on Beaver Island, including the Pam Grassmick Nature Preserve.
Team 6098 BIROBOT’s first competition event for 2026 is at Lake Superior State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. The team will arrive on March 26th, compete on March 27th and 28th, and return on March 29th. You can find out more about FIRST and BICS’s FRC Team #6098 bIrobot at birobot.org. You can keep up with our progress at events and find links to watch them live on TheBlueAlliance.com
Ticket sales for the 2026 Warblers on the Water events, May 22-25, will begin this week in March. The festival will feature new field trips to celebrate Great Lakes Islands biodiversity.
