Community Calendar Report for Monday, June 15th, 2026

Work is progressing on repaving the main runway at the municipal airport, with crews there working through the weekend.  The existing pavement has been fully removed, trucked to the Ricksgers farm and is in the process of being converted to road gravel. Some test surfaces have been put in place to validate the material being used for paving the runway next on the docket. Meantime, prep work continues on East Side Drive for paving work there. There are lots of work trucks out and about, so be on the lookout for them and the road crews. Expect occasional delays and detours on East Side Drive between the Four Corners and McCauley’s.

In Lansing, Michigan’s new state budget is due July first, but House Speaker Matt Hall says he won’t guarantee lawmakers will meet the deadline. Hall says he wants a budget that cuts spending and avoids using the state’s rainy-day fund. He’s floated the idea of a temporary spending extension that could last until after November’s elections. School groups and Senate Democrats oppose that idea, saying districts need budget certainty before the new fiscal year begins.

The Traverse Ticker reports today that Northern Michigan fruit growers see mixed prospects for this year’s harvest. Many tart cherry orchards suffered frost damage during an April cold snap, pointing to another below-average crop. Sweet cherries appear to have fared better. Area wineries, meanwhile, are cautiously optimistic, with growers reporting little winter damage to grape vines and expecting a solid harvest.

On the Island, the AMVETS and Elks Lodge hosted a Flag Day event yesterday. After a walk from the Lodge to Veterans Memorial Park, there was a short ceremony led by Greg Doig.

The Beaver Island Gallery was the site of a traditional afternoon tea Saturday hosted by Chuck Schoenknecht and Ward Paul. There was a full house to enjoy tea, treats and a presentation on the tradition…and funds were raised to support the BIC Center.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The Island Beltway is running smoothly save for occasional paving delays on East Side Drive and hauling delays by the municipal airport. There are no bridge delays. But, hey, let’s be careful out there as traffic increases with seasonal residents returning every day and the kids and all out enjoying the warmer weather.

On This Day in 1775 the Continental Congress appoints George Washington commander-in-chief of the newly created Continental Army, placing him in charge of America’s fight for independence. And in 1785, the world’s first fatal aviation accident occurs when two French balloonists are killed after their hot-air balloon crashes near Paris.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is tenuous (adjective) [TEN-yoo-us]. Something that is tenuous is weak, flimsy, or uncertain. The word comes from the Latin word tenuis [TEN-oo-iss], meaning thin, narrow, or slight, and is related to the English word thin. Tenuous can describe something physically delicate, like a silkworm’s thread, but it’s more often used figuratively. A team with a tenuous lead could still lose the game, and a tenuous connection between two events may not be much of a connection at all.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday…

Here’s a thought for the day from General George Washington: “Discipline is the soul of an army. It makes small numbers formidable; procures success to the weak, and esteem to all.”

On a lighter note
I tried to start a hot air balloon company

but it never really took off.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Monday, June 15th, 2026. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
