Community Calendar Report for Tuesday, June 16th, 2026

Heavy maintenance work continues at B-I-C-S as crews replace siding and some framing that has not stood the test of water and time. Additional work this summer will include the replacement of flooring. Over at the Municipal Airport, paving crews have the ramp finished and are about ready to start repaving the main runway.  The summer will stay busy with work as paving continues on East Side Drive and, later on, lateral drilling machines and equipment arrive to bore paths for fiber to land on the Island on the north end and east side.

The Michigan Bureau of Elections has suspended Antrim County Clerk Victoria Bishop’s access to the state’s voter registration database, saying she exceeded her authority by altering voter records and sending notices that should have been handled by local clerks. State Elections Director Jonathan Brater says Bishop must complete training, comply with election law, and answer questions about the changes before access is restored. Bishop, who was elected on promises to clean up voter rolls, has previously defended her actions. State officials say voter services should continue uninterrupted ahead of the August primary.

Two Michigan State University trustees have been formally censured after refusing to sign a new board ethics policy. Trustees Mike Balow and Rema Vassar say the policy could limit dissent and free speech by elected board members. Supporters of the policy say it simply prevents a minority of trustees from delaying decisions once the board has voted. The censure carries penalties including the loss of some trustee privileges.

Today’s BIC Center Name of the Day is Gus.  If that’s your name, come on down to the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

On our Birthday List: Kathy Maudrie and Terry Meaney are celebrating today.  Happy Birthday to Terry and Kathy, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at the BIC Center and WVBI.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The Island Beltway is running smoothly save for occasional paving delays on East Side Drive and hauling delays by the municipal airport. There are no bridge delays. But, hey, let’s be careful out there as traffic increases with seasonal residents returning every day and the kids and all out enjoying the warmer weather.

Our countdown to 250 continues today with a look at what happened On This Day in 1775: American colonial forces face British troops in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the Siege of Boston. Although the British capture the battlefield after three assaults, they suffer heavy losses. The battle proves the colonial militia can stand up to the world’s most powerful army and becomes an early symbol of American determination in the Revolutionary War. Also on this date in 1812, President James Madison signs a declaration of war against Great Britain, initiating the War of 1812.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is gamut (noun) [GAM-ut]. A gamut is a complete range or series of related things. If something “runs the gamut,” it covers every part of a range. The word comes from medieval music theory, where gamma-ut referred to the lowest note in a musical scale. Over time, gamut came to mean the full range of notes—and eventually, any full range of things.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…

Here’s a thought for the day from President James Madison: “The purpose of the Constitution is to restrict the majority’s ability to harm a minority.”

On a lighter note
When does a joke become a dad joke?

When it’s full groan.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Tuesday, June 16th, 2026. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
