On this date in 461 St. Patrick, a Christian missionary and bishop, died in Ireland. Patrick, born in Roman Britain, was captured and enslaved in Ireland at age 16. He escaped after six years, guided by a dream, and returned to Britain. Patrick, after another dream urging him to return to Ireland, became a bishop and preached the Gospel there for 40 years. Legends about him include baptizing hundreds in a day and using a shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. St. Patrick’s Day, originally a religious holiday in Ireland, evolved into a celebration of Irish heritage. The first parade was held in Florida in 1601, and the tradition spread globally, becoming a day of festivities and tourism.
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Erin go bragh is an Irish phrase that means “Ireland forever.”
// They proudly waved the Irish flag during the parade, shouting “Erin go bragh!”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…

On a lighter note… What do you call a bad Irish dance? A jig mistake.
