Peaine Township has begun the first of two vault toilet upgrades planned for this summer. The projects, at Bill Wagner Memorial Campground and the Lake Geneserath Boat Launch, will give the township three universally accessible vault toilets when completed. The work is supported by two $10,000 Charlevoix County parks grants, along with an additional $3,000 contribution from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation. Township officials say the upgrades will improve access and expand recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
The Health Department of Northwest Michigan has launched its annual beach monitoring program, testing water quality at about 50 public beaches in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties—including public beaches on the Island. Beaches are checked weekly for E. coli bacteria. If unsafe levels are found, advisory signs will be posted and the beach retested daily until conditions improve. Results are available online through the Health Department and the state beach monitoring website. There’s a link for that in today’s script online.

In other water news, scientists say the invasive bloody red shrimp is now established in all five Great Lakes after dozens of adults and juveniles were found in Lake Superior last summer. The tiny crustacean, likely introduced through ship ballast water, was first detected in the Great Lakes in 2006. Researchers say its long-term impact remains uncertain, but studies elsewhere have linked it to declines in native zooplankton populations.
The Michigan Court of Appeals has upheld the state’s law against interfering with police officers on duty. The ruling stemmed from a 2022 Upper Peninsula traffic stop where a man recording troopers repeatedly ignored orders to stay back and stop shining a light in an officer’s eyes. The court said people have a right to film police, but officers may impose reasonable restrictions to safely do their jobs.
Back on the Island, a good crowd gathered Friday evening for Islander Jake Bontrager’s book reading and signing at the library. Jake read from his book Subject 77-B. You can check out a copy at the library.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The Island Beltway is running smoothly save for occasional paving delays on East Side Drive and hauling delays by the municipal airport. There are no bridge delays. But, the Island is busier than ever with all the construction traffic, bikers and hikers, fawns and turtles and traffic when the ferry arrives, so let’s be careful out there. |

In our countdown to 250, on this date in 1775, the Second Continental Congress authorized two million dollars in paper currency, known as “Continentals,” to help fund the new Continental Army in the opening months of the American Revolution. And on this date in 1813, during the War of 1812, Canadian heroine Laura Secord set out on a 32-kilometer journey to warn British forces of an American attack. Her warning helped lead to a British and Indigenous surprise victory at the Battle of Beaver Dams, one of the most famous episodes of the war. By the by, the battle wasn’t over beaver dams; it just happened in a region in the Niagara peninsula where beaver dams were common.
