Community Calendar Report For Friday, August28, 2026

In a letter to the community released yesterday, the St. James Township Board has reaffirmed its support for maintaining public access to the Gull Harbor Natural Area while protecting it from damage. The dispute involves Gull Harbor Drive and an EGLE violation notice issued to the Charlevoix County Road Commission over the road’s use of Lake Michigan bottomlands. While the board initially thought the township might be cited by EGLE as well, that has not come to pass. So they have no legal basis to intervene in EGLE’s enforcement process. But, they are issuing this letter and encourage residents to contact state Representative Parker Fairbairn, state Senator John Damoose, EGLE and the county road commission to make their positions on the issue known.
The Harbor Princess ferry, known for its trips to Beaver Island, in the past, will offer fall color cruises around Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix from September 26 to October 18. The cruises, part of the Little Traverse Bay Ferry Company fleet, will feature afternoon tours, sunset cruises, and special events like the Charlevoix Apple Fest and history cruises. Two special history cruises are planned this fall in partnership with the Charlevoix Historical Society. The first cruise, a fundraising event, is on Sunday, October 4th. Details and tickets are available from the Charlevoix Historical Society by calling 231-547-0373 or emailing info@chxhistory.com
The 120th Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair began Monday, August 24 and runs through Sunday, August 30 at the Emmet County Fairgrounds in Petoskey.

On this date in 1952 the presidential election was influenced by the Red Scare, with accusations of communist infiltration in the United States. The Senate Internal Security Subcommittee reported that the Radio Writers Guild, controlling most radio programs, was dominated by communists. The Guild, producing over 90% of radio programs, was allegedly controlled by communists for nine years, part of a larger effort to control US media.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday…
Here’s a thought for the day from —FEDERAL JUDGE WILLIAM H. HASTIE “Democracy is a process, not a static condition. It is becoming, rather than being. It can easily be lost, but never is fully won. Its essence is eternal struggle.”
On a lighter note ,Women should not have children after 36—really, 36 children is enough
