On this date in 1883 The Krakatoa volcanic eruption was one of the most powerful in recorded history, killing 36,000 people and producing the loudest sounds ever heard.
Four eruptions the following day were catastrophic, with explosions heard 3,000 miles away and ash reaching 50 miles high. The eruption caused 36,000 deaths, primarily from tsunamis and pyroclastic flows.
