Community Calendar Report For Wednesday, August 26, 2026

Country icon, hitmaker (“Jolene,” “9 to 5”), and beloved philanthropist Dolly Parton passed away yesterday at age 80 following a brief battle with cancer. Flags across the country are at half-mast, tributes are pouring in worldwide, and private memorial services are being planned in Nashville.
Local housing officials, developers, and community leaders across the Midwest are taking a “wait-and-see” approach following the enactment of the landmark 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. While the bipartisan law promises to address chronic national housing shortages, its practical impact on Midwestern markets remains unproven as federal agencies work through long implementation timelines.
While regional advocates welcome the federal focus on manufactured housing, modular construction, and zoning updates, the consensus across Midwestern municipalities is that measurable relief in home prices and rental inventory will take years to materialize.
The 120th Emmet-Charlevoix County Fair began Monday, August 24 and runs through Sunday, August 30 at the Emmet County Fairgrounds in Petoskey.
