For those who are questioned by birders as to where they can go for an early breakfast on Saturday and Sunday before hopping into cars to go birding, Dalwhinnies has graciously offered to open at 6:30 a.m.. Thanks also to Eric and Dana Hodgson for the use of a large passenger capacity vehicle and to Island Airways for the use of two vans. We’re also grateful to the Charlevoix County Transit staff who are helping move birders around the island. Between cars and the generosity of the community and business owners, we are going to have a great birding weekend! Those not going out on field trips Sunday morning will enjoy the Am Vets wonderful breakfast at 8 a.m. Thanks for the warm birders’ welcome on signs around town!

Update –
I talked to the Coast Guard in Traverse City last week and the fly-over is scheduled for 1:00 PM Monday May 30th at the Veterans Park.
Also every year Brian Gallagher and Alvin Lafreniere place American flags on the grave sites of all the veterans buried on the island, over 130 flags. This year Michelle Grooters has offered to donate and place fresh flower on all the graves. This is the first time this has been done and the AMVETS want to thank Michelle for so honoring our deceased veterans.
Have you wanted to learn how to become a “birder” but have never really known where to start? Sunday, May 29th at 4 p.m. at the Community Center is your chance to learn some birding ID skills in the classroom, and then head out to the field to put your new skills to use. Petoskey Regional Audubon Society (PRAS) President Darrell Lawson will lead a Birding 101 class and then the group will head to Gull Harbor to listen and look for migrating and resident birds. We will cover field guide choice/use, optics selection/use, tips for learning bird vocalizations, and identification pitfalls to avoid. Bring your own binoculars if you have them. Free and open to the public of all ages. Register on line at http://www.beaverislandbirdingtrail.org
