The Health Center Board met last Friday and covered quite a bit of ground. They elected Donna Kubic and Connie Wojan back to the board filling all open vacancies. They also approved projects to make all of their exterior public entry doors A-D-A compliant, an expansion of their X-Ray room to get it ready for a new X-ray system and to install an interior and exterior signage system. They also discussed pending projects and the need to communicate with the public about upcoming votes on millage support for the Center. There is a vote in St. James in August this year and in Peaine next year. Thanks to board chair Frank D-Andria for providing the material for this report. More information on the meeting is in today’s script online. The Health Center’s nine member Board of Directors met on Friday, April 22 and • Elected Donna Kubic (Peaine Township) and Connie Wojan (St. James Township) to the Board, filling all open vacancies; • Awarded contracts to McDonough Construction of Beaver Island to make all public entry doors ADA compliant (automatic); to Universal Sign Systems of Grand Rapids for the installation of an electronic message center and to McDonough Construction of Beaver Island for the expansion/renovation of the Center’s x-ray room in anticipation of the arrival on $85,000 in new state of the art x ray equipment. Funding for all three projects and the x-ray equipment are made possible thanks to the generosity of Center individual and corporate donors, plus the receipt of Federal and Charlevoix County Community Foundation grants. Lastly the Board will move forward with re-biding the shingle staining project since no bids were received. • Accepted an invitation to meet with Maner Costersian on the status of the audit that was commissioned; • Received an update from the Center’s Managing Director, including a report that all staff vacancies had been filled and that new electronic medical record software is being acquired; • Acknowledged reports from various committees: (1) The Good Samaritan Fund Committee on the dental initiative, which provided a free dental exam, x-ray and cleaning for students at the Island’ community school (thanks to a grant from the Elks Foundation (Beaver Island Lodge #8886) and the generosity of Center donors); (2) A status report on the work of the Ad Hoc Patient Survey Committee to regularly solicit input from patients on Center services; (3) A report on the Ad Hoc Committee on Updating the Center’s Strategic Plan. In addition the Board received a report from the Board President on (4) a meeting requested with the Commission on Aging regarding home health care and related COA services offered island seniors. It was noted that the COA position on senior services is based in part on survey results that date back to 2019. However, current anecdotal information indicates senior interest and priorities may have shifted and thus a new survey would assist COA in gaining a contemporary picture on what island seniors and their families see as priorities; (5) The Acting Treasurer observed that in August St. James Township voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to renew an existing mileage rate (.2 mills) for the Health Center. Peaine Township voters will have a similar opportunity in 2023. It was the sense of the Board that a working group should be established to help inform St James voters of the impending ballot measure; and (6) The Board received a report from the Resource Development and Marketing/Funding Committee that Sunday July 24th has been selected as the date for the annual donor appreciation reception. The event will be held from 3:00pm to 5:00pm outdoors in the Center’s Wellness Garden Area. • Voted to approve the creation of an Ad Hoc Committee to make a recommendation on amending the Bylaws to include a board attendance policy. This week is international Dark Sky Week. Here’s the fourth of our daily tips on what you can do to help protect dark skies on the island or wherever you live: Look for lighting that minimizes blue light emissions. Color matters. Blue light brightens the night sky more than any other color of light, it’s important to minimize the amount emitted. Exposure to blue light at night has also been shown to harm human health and endanger wildlife. IDA recommends using lighting that has a color temperature of no more than 3000 Kelvins. You’ll find more info about this tip along with other outdoor lighting tips on the Beaver Island Dark Sky Website at dark sky island dot org. Quick program note for you. This evening on Beaver Island Perspectives we’ll repeat our interview with Kristi Davis and Dave Boutette. They’ll be appearing on the island at the Whiskey Point Brewing Company on Saturday evening. In our show, they’ll talk about their latest music, what they did to keep busy during the pandemic and how they discovered Beaver Island. Listen after our news at 5:00 or, if you miss it, catch the podcast at wvbi.net. |

ON THIS DAY in 1789 Mutiny breaks out on the HMS Bounty. Having completed his mission of sailing from England to Tahiti to gather breadfruit saplings, Captain Bligh finds his command under siege less than a month into the return voyage. Acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian leads the mutinous crewmembers, and they will set Bligh and 18 loyalists adrift in an open boat. Also on this date in 1994 C-I-A counterintelligence officer, and spy for the U-S-S-R and Russia, Aldrich Ames pleads guilty to espionage and is sentenced to life in prison. His years of treason compromised hundreds of intelligence operations and led to the execution of sources. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: salt junk (noun) [SAWLT-JUNK], means dried salted beef. In the past, sailors survived long voyages eating salt junk. Salt junk might refer to any salty junk food, but, by definition, it refers to dried salted beef and has nautical origins as a name for food preserved with salt for long sea voyages. The word junk itself was used for pieces of old cable or cordage, which influenced the term salt junk for tough, chewy food. |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday… |

Here’s a thought for the day: “A successful person is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at them.” On a lighter note: What’s the hardest part about having an ant as a pet. Tying on the leash. |
