This week is international Dark Sky Week. Here’s the second of our daily tips on what you can do to help protect dark skies on the island or wherever you live: All light should have a clear purpose. Before installing or replacing a light, determine if light is needed. Consider how the use of light will impact the area, including wildlife and the environment. Consider using reflective paints or self-luminous markers for signs, curbs, and steps to reduce the need for permanently installed outdoor lighting. You’ll find more info about this tip along with other outdoor lighting tips on the Beaver Island Dark Sky Website at dark sky island dot org. There’s an election coming up next week with two millage proposals that concern education on the island. One of the proposals seeks approval for a point 7-5 millage renewal for school career and technical programs. This program has been in place since 1996 and this is the fifth time voters are asked to support the funding. If approved, approximately $4,615,271 will be appropriated this year for the existing 47 programs in both Charlevoix and Emmet counties. The second proposal would add another .25 mills for career and tech programs to allow for program expansion. The exact ballot language is available at a link in today’s script online: https://charlevoixcountymi.documents-on-demand.com/?l=c67a5be559f7e5119e45001fbc00ed84&d=fbf8dc9ae7a6ec11a36e000c29a59557 |

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly and the bridges are clear. Only fly in the ointment is that the deer are very busy out there—dashing and darting everywhere. So, let’s careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in 1986 satellite TV dealer John MacDougall, under the pseudonym ‘Captain Midnight,’ jams the broadcast signal of cable network HBO for a few minutes, replacing its programming with a protest message. The protest? HBO has scrambled its signal, forcing satellite TV customers to pay for HBO. MacDougall will receive a $5,000 fine and a year of probation. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: cerebral (adjective) [suh-REE-brul], means “of or relating to the brain or intellect,” or “primarily intellectual in nature.” Cerebral comes from Latin cerebrum—a word meaning “brain.” Another brainy word is cerebrate, “to use the mind” or “to think.” |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Wednesday… |

Here’s a thought for the day from Winston Churchill: “Success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm.” On a lighter note: Why did the cow do jumping-jacks. She was practicing her cowlisthenics. |
