First, some news… There was a good turn out last evening for a presentation on the future of Antho Vineyards. The winery was founded by Kate Leese and her husband Adam Kendall. After their tragic death last fall in a plane crash, their parents and friends are working to see their dream of a world-class vineyard on the island fulfilled. About 40 people came to the meeting to learn about plans for this season and volunteer opportunities. Volunteers helped put the vineyard to bed for the winter last fall and will now help get it ready for the growing season. Because the plants were just put in last year, no fruit from them is expected for several years. If you’d like to help out this season, info on volunteering is in the calendar entry for yesterday’s meeting. There was also good turnout for the Beaver Island Dark Sky projects special showing of Losing the Dark and October Sky Friday evening at the BIC Center. There was a short presentation on protecting the Dark Skies on the island. Upcoming Dark Sky events include the Eta Aquarids Meteor Shower this Week and a total Lunar Eclipse mid-month. Details are in the calendar. With warm weather comes the reemergence of bugs—including ticks and the threat of Lyme disease. Island vet Dr. Jeff Powers says lyme disease cases are rising everywhere. He says that while most infections are mild, they can be debilitating for pets and humans. So, caution is advised. Emmet County’s recycling program is in the news this morning. The three decade program is being hailed as a model for other Michigan communities. The single-stream system is said to be a million dollar revenue source for the county. An eight-bill package now pending in the state legislature would help other counties establish similar programs. There’s more info on the program in a story from M-Live linked in our script online. https://www.mlive.com/public-interest/2022/05/one-michigan-county-makes-millions-by-recycling-it-could-become-a-state-model.html Down in East Lansing, M-S-U and other scientists are spinning up the world’s most powerful heavy-ion accelerator at their FRIB—or Facility for Rare Isotope beams. Among other things, research at the facility is expected to add more clues to the origins of the universe and development of stars. More down to earth uses include the development of new scanning technologies of use in medicine, industrial processes and environmental sensors. The facility will create about 1,000 jobs and pump 4.4 billion into the states economy over 20 years according to an M-S-U conducted study done to support creation of the facility. Finally, a reminder about next Tuesday’s election. On the ballot ion both townships are proposals to continue and expand the school district’s career and technical education programs—which directly affects funding and educational opportunities at B-I-C-S. |

BIRTHDAYS: None on the list for today. But, if we missed you on our list, Happy Birthday to you from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |

TRAFFIC: Our W-V-B-I virtual actocopter is virtually grounded because of the fog, but our ground reporting team sees no delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly and the bridges are clear. The deer are still busy, though—dashing and darting everywhere. So, let’s careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in 1952 after years of testing and development, British airline BOAC welcomes passengers to the jet age as the De Havilland Comet 1, the first passenger jet to enter service, takes off from London for Johannesburg, South Africa. Although the route will make five stops, and take 21 hours and 20 minutes, it’s about 50 percent faster than conventional aircraft. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: Piggyback (verb) [PIG-ee-bak], means “to set up or cause to function in conjunction with something larger, more important, or already in existence or operation” or “to function or be carried on or as if on the back of another.” Piggyback was first used in the 16th century as an adverb, meaning “up on the back and shoulders” (as in “the child was carried piggyback”). It comes from a phrase of unknown origin, a pick pack. There is also the less-common adverb pickaback. The verb piggyback didn’t piggyback on the adverb until the 19th century. |

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Monday… |

Here’s a thought for the day: “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” On a lighter note: How did the meeting go between the caty and the coach? Cata-claws-mic. |
