Community Calendar Report for Tuesday, November 25th, 2025

Northern Michigan is in for a windy, snowy holiday stretch. Meteorologists at National Weather Service Gaylord say rain turns to blowing snow Wednesday night, with strong winds making Thanksgiving travel tough. On Beaver Island expect just a few inches of snow, but gusts over 30 miles an hour, with rough rides visibility on the lake. On the mainland, bands of lake-effect snow from Cadillac to Petoskey could bring up to eight inches, with drifting and whiteouts. The safest travel window is today through Wednesday morning, before conditions deteriorate.

Michigan’s new 24% wholesale marijuana tax is headed to court. The state’s cannabis industry says lawmakers and the governor violated the constitution by changing a voter-approved marijuana law without the required supermajorities. The state counters the tax is a separate road-funding measure. A Court of Claims judge hears the challenge Tuesday and could decide whether to block the tax before it takes effect January 1.

Up north to our east, sky watchers caught a bright flash before sunrise Sunday — a meteor blazing across the sky at nearly 100,000 miles an hour. NASA says it first appeared above Hubbard Lake and broke apart high over Lake Huron. It likely came from a small comet fragment and was too small to leave meteorites behind, but cameras from Houghton Lake to Alcona County captured the rare sight.

On this day in 1963, John F. Kennedy is laid to rest in Washington, D.C., three days after his assassination in Dallas. Thousands line the streets as his casket passed on a horse-drawn caisson. In a moment that moved the world, his three-year-old son, John F. Kennedy Jr., stepped forward and offered a final salute to his father.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is perdition (noun) [per-DISH-un], meaning hell or eternal damnation — though it’s usually used figuratively now. The word came into English in the 1300s from Anglo-French perdiciun (pair-dee-SYUN) and the Latin perdere (PAIR-deh-ray), meaning “to destroy.” An early sense was “utter destruction,” but today perdition almost always refers to a state — or place — of spiritual ruin.
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday…
Here’s a thought for the day from John F. Kenedy, Jr.: “People often tell me I could be a great man. I’d rather be a good man.”
On a lighter note…
What do you get when you cross a turkey with a centipede? Drumsticks for everyone!
