Community Calendar Report For Tuesday, March 3, 2026

Community Calendar Report for Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026.
First some news…
March typically marks the start of maple syrup production in northern Michigan, and sugarbushes are gearing up for the 2026 season even after several difficult years. Michigan ranks fifth nationally in maple acreage, tap numbers, tap yield and overall syrup output, usually producing around 200,000 gallons annually. Recent seasons, however, have been challenging in 2024, warmer temperatures shortened the crucial freeze–thaw period, cutting production to about 200,000 gallons from 205,000 in 2023, and a devastating late-March ice storm last year damaged many sugarbushes, knocking down limbs and infrastructure. Some producers are still rebuilding or sitting out this season, while others hope that a more typical winter and steadier sap runs will restore yields and bring visitors back to maple open houses and tours across the region.
A total lunar eclipse, sometimes called a Blood Moon, occurred on this early morning March 3rd, with the Moon appearing orange-red due to Earth’s atmosphere scattering sunlight. The eclipse was best viewed in western North America, Central America, and the western part of South America. The eclipse peaked in the early morning hours on Tuesday, March 3rd, with totality occurring around 6:04–7:02 a.m. US Eastern Time.
