COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for October 14, 2020

The burst of recent new COVID-19 cases has pushed hospitalization rates up with state health officials saying yesterday that utilization rates are the highest they’ve been since May.  Michigan’s chief medical executive says that especially concerning given the onset of cold weather with cold and flu season on the way.  She urged Michiganders to stick with basic prevention efforts like wearing masks, social distancing and washing hands.  It worked in the spring, she says and it will work again now. There is concern that fatigue over the restrictions and months of low numbers have caused people to back off their prevention efforts.  Islanders seem to be doing their part pretty much across the board—face masks, social distancing and hand washing—and yesterday’s immunization clinic saw a non-stop flow of folks getting flu shots and other immunizations.  Remember:  Protect yourself; protect the island.

The Health Center is reporting five more COVID-19 tests this morning.  One of those is already back as negative; four are pending.  They’ve now run 197 tests with 187 back negative.  The six positive tests don’t involve any current active cases on the island and are all more than 30 days old. Safe start numbers for the state show that testing rates remain high and while the positive test rate has ticked up slightly to 3.8%, the number of cases per million—now at 64.1—continues its downward trend.

In our region there were 14 new cases and one new death. One of the new cases was in Charlevoix.  The new death was in Grand Traverse.  Total active cases in the region is 350.  Average for new cases is 15 and the average for deaths is 0.  Safe start numbers for our zone continue to look good with a 2.1 percent positive test rate and new cases at 30.1 per million.
