COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for Tuesday October 12. 2020

Friday, an attempted coup plot in Michigan was revealed as federal officials arrested six nutjobs and state officials arrested another seven.  The federal case involved an alleged plot to kidnap the governor, put her on trial, attack the capital, target police and more.  Governor Whitmer responded to the revelations by blaming the Trump administration.  State Republican leaders condemned the plot but later criticized the governor over revelations that she and other state officials had known about the plot for weeks, but failed to alert Republican legislative leaders even though the plot involved and attack on the capitol building.

On Friday and Saturday, state health officials reported an eye-popping number of new COVID-19 cases, but relatively few deaths. Monday, the state’s new outbreak report showed clusters at almost 100 schools, colleges and universities involving more than 5,000 people.  More on that in a moment, but also yesterday, the State Supreme Court issued orders rejecting the governor’s claim that its decision invalidating her post April COVID-19 executive orders was not effective immediately and her requests for a delay.  All but one member of the court joined in that decision, saying they did not have authority to delay the effective date.  In a sperate decision, they ruled on claims by Republican legislative leaders that the governor’s actions on COVID-19 exceeded her authority again finding that the law under which she acted was an unconstitutional delegation of authority.

While the director of the state health department has issued orders under separate authority that re-impose masking requirements, social distancing rules and gathering size limitations—other items covered by the invalidated orders remain in limbo. One of bipartisan concern seems to be treatment of unemployment benefits.  The orders had extended the benefit period and changed eligibility rules, among other things. The state Senate has passed a bill addressing those issues, but it is tied to legislation that would limit employer liability for COVID-19 claims, which the governor opposes.

On the island, latest Health Center report shows six more tests run bringing that total to 192.  All of those along with 4 that were reported as pending on Thursday have come back negative.  So now there are 186 negative tests, none pending and six positive cases—but none of those for cases active on the island.

We mentioned the new outbreaks report that provides information where COVID-19 clusters develop and tracks them.  It shows 67 clusters in our safe start zone—but only one at a school, which is in Leelanau.  No college or university clusters in our zone.  And the eyepopping new case reports? Friday and Saturday’s report (which covers results collected on Thursday and Friday) show more than 2,500 new cases, and yesterday’s report, which covers the weekend showed 1,810 new cases.  That’s an average of more than eleven hundred cases (1,107) over the four days.  That brings total cases in the state to 136,465, with 25,633 active.  Over the same four day period 29 deaths were reported.  While not dismissing any death, that number presents a much smaller ratio than we have been seeing in comparison to the number of new cases.  Total deaths now stand at 6,898.  Average for new cases is up over 1,000 to 1,077.  Average for deaths statewide is 14.

In our region there were 48 new cases over the four day period and no new deaths. Six of the new cases were in Charlevoix. 343 cases are active.  Average for new cases is 14 and the average for deaths is 0.

Safe start numbers for our zone and the state continue to look good despite the large number of cases.  Now change in any of the rankings assigned.

Full county-by-county data for our region for the entire period we’ve been discussing are in today’s script online along with state, regional, U-P and Safe Start Zone totals, plus rolling averages and active case estimates.
