Community Calendar Report for Wednesday, October 8th, 2025

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed Michigan’s new $81 billion state budget, ending months of political wrangling in Lansing. The bipartisan plan boosts road funding, continues free school meals, and sets record per-pupil spending. It also creates a new 24-percent wholesale marijuana tax to help fund repairs. Business subsidies were cut, but leaders say a new economic development deal will come later this year. Republicans won trims to vacant state jobs and programs they called wasteful, while Democrats highlighted mental health and safety funds for schools. Whitmer called the deal proof that divided government can still deliver results.

Down in T-C, A 24-year-old Muskegon man is in jail after state troopers stopped his car on U.S. 31 in Traverse City Sunday. Police say they found more than 80 grams of suspected fentanyl, plus crack and meth. He faces charges of possession with intent to deliver.

In sports, the Detroit Tigers dropped Game 3 of the AL Division Series to Seattle, 8-4, extending their Comerica Park skid to eight straight losses. The Mariners now lead the best-of-five series two games. First pitch for the must-win Game 4 for the Tigers is set for 3:00 this afternoon in Detroit.

Meantime, the Islander’s soccer squad is reveling in an 8 to zip victory against the Polar Bears of Grand Marais as they get ready for N-L-L tournament action this weekend.   Senior Lysander McGinnity led the charge with two goals and an assist, while freshman Lucas Pease found the back of the net twice himself. The scoring didn’t stop there — goals also came from sophomore Madeline McGee, junior Parker DeLaat, eighth-grader Sawyer Gazdecki, and senior co-captain Lexi Pease.

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Larry.  If that’s your name, come on into the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Steve Connaghan, Pam Chapman and Ian Burgess are on our list today. Happy Birthday to Pam, Ian and Steve, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But, let’s be careful out there—especially in the school zone.

On this date in 1871, A long drought, strong winds, buildings made primarily of wood, and perhaps a twitchy cow all combine to stoke a minor fire into a conflagration the likes of which Chicago has never seen. Two days of ferocious flames will leave hundreds of thousands homeless and kill some 300 people. But that wasn’t the only fire. Also on this date that year in Michigan, Holland, Manistee, and ninety percent of the homes in Michigan’s thumb are destroyed by a fire. An estimated two million acres burned, hundreds were made homeless, and over two hundred died.

150 years ago, fire devastated Holland as Great Chicago Fire burned

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is finicky (adjective) [FIN-ih-kee], an adjective for someone hard to please—or for something that needs extra care and precision. Boomers and Gen Xers may recall Morris the Cat—famous for being a finicky eater who’d only touch one very fine brand of food. That tells you about the etymology of our word which traces back to the 1800s, evolving from “finicking” and “finical,” all rooted in the idea of being “fine.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday

Here’s a thought for the day from Saturday Night Live star Chevy Chase, who celebrates a birthday today: “The best advice I can give you about falling is to never land.”

On a lighter note…

What do you call a pile of cats?

A meowtain.
