Community Calendar Report For Thursday, October 9, 2025

Community Calendar Report for Thursday, October 9th, 2025.

First some news…

This is Fire Prevention Week across Michigan, and safety experts are sounding the alarm. In 2024, nearly 150 Michiganders lost their lives to fires — one of the deadliest years in a decade. Fire officials urge everyone to be vigilant and test their smoke alarms regularly.

Michael McLeieer, a 30-year veteran firefighter and president of the nonprofit E.S.C.A.P.E., reminds families to have two exits from every room in case of emergency and to create a clear evacuation plan.

For those with hearing loss, special smoke alarms are available. Former State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer says devices like the Home Aware Two use flashing lights and vibrating pads to provide critical warnings. Free smoke alarms and installations are available through many fire departments in Michigan.

Fire Prevention Week runs through Sunday.

A hard frost/freeze is forecast for Northern Michigan, ending the growing season in most areas.

• A Freeze Warning was in effect from midnight to 9 AM Thursday

• Weather setup: High pressure, clear skies, and little wind will allow for rapid overnight cooling.

• Expected overnight lows:

• Most areas: mid-20s to low-30s °F

• Warm spots near Great Lakes: upper-30s to near 40°F

• These cold temperatures could damage or kill crops and sensitive plants.

• Thursday night may see patchy frost, but temperatures will be a bit warmer and frost less widespread.

On this date in 1967, socialist revolutionary and guerrilla leader Che Guevara, age 39, was killed by the Bolivian army. The U.S.-military-backed Bolivian forces captured Guevara on October 8 while battling his band of guerrillas in Bolivia and executed him the following day. His hands were cut off as proof of death, and his body was buried in an unmarked grave. In 1997, Guevara’s remains were found and sent back to Cuba, where they were reburied in a ceremony attended by President Fidel Castro and thousands of Cubans.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day Duress, which is typically used with under, refers to force or threats meant to make someone do something. It is used especially of unlawful coercion.

// The defense asserts that the defendant’s confession was made under duress.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn who wrie, “It is the artist who realizes that there is a supreme force above him and works gladly away as a small apprentice under God’s heaven”

On a lighter note…I was once asked who my favorite vampire was, and I replied, the one on Sesame Street. I was then told that he doesn’t count, to which I replied, he absolutely does count.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Thursday, October 9th, 2025. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
