First, a heads up for those flying across today that the Charlevoix Municipal Airport is holding a planned emergency drill with fire, police, and EMS agencies. The two-hour exercise will not affect flights or airport operations, but you may see some unusual activity going on at the airport. Across the really big drink, Storm Amy has battered western Ireland, leaving thousands without power and claiming at least one life in County Donegal. On Arranmore Island—our sister isle—residents face fierce winds and outages. Meanwhile, Jackson Smith, host of WVBI’s Songs from the Trail, is there now, riding out the storm alongside the islanders. The flags at Arranmore’s Twinning Memorial whip in Storm Amy’s winds. Photo by Jackson Smith Meanwhile, back in our area, many residents are still cleaning up six months after this spring’s devastating ice storm. Tree services remain backlogged, home repairs drag on, and financial help is scarce. Some co-ops face massive cleanup costs that are causing raised electric rates, while families still struggle with broken windows, damaged roofs, and dangerous debris. Advocates say state and federal aid has been slow, leaving many feeling forgotten. After yesterday’s cold front, Michigan is tumbling into fall at least for a few days. The National Weather Service has issued Frost Warnings for much of the Lower Peninsula and Freeze Warnings in the U.P. Overnight lows are expected near freezing, with daytime highs struggling in the 50s and 60s. No worries so far about frost on the Island, though, and the forecast has us back to 70 by Sunday. Meantime, Firefighters are battling an 85-acre wildfire near the Roscommon State Forest, first reported Sunday. Crews have about 75% contained but face tough terrain and high winds. The DNR says drought conditions are keeping fire danger high, and the cause is still under investigation. On the Island, the Shamrock has announced special offerings for Harvest on the Harbor this Friday and Saturday. They’ll have Pumpkin Bisque Soup, Smash Brat Burgers with Beer Cheese on a Pretzel Bun, Braised Beef Pot Roast with roasted veggies and mashed potatoes and Apple Cherry Bread Pudding. We’ll have word on more specials and activities for Harvest on the Harbor tomorrow… |

On this date in 1975, the town of Cadillac, Michigan, was kissed by rock ’n’ roll. The band KISS came to celebrate the high school football team that had turned its season around the year before—going from early losses to seven straight wins after blasting KISS in the locker room. For two wild days, the band joined the homecoming parade, played the dance, and left the Class of ’75—and the whole town—with a legend that still rocks today. Also on this date in 1985 Palestinian Liberation Front terrorists hijack he Italian cruise liner ‘Achille Lauro‘ and murder a wheelchair-bound American tourist, Leon Klinghoffer. Then, on this date in 2023, another group of Palestinian terrorists invade Israel killing almost 1,200 people and kidnapping about 250 many of whom remain in captivity. LIFE published a special KISS edition in April 2023. Cadillac is featured on pages 38-39. Image from neffcadillackiss.com |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is candor (noun) [KAN-der]. Candor refers to the quality of being open, sincere, and honest. It comes from the Latin verb candēre (cahn-DAY-reh), “to shine or glow.” That root also gave us words like candle, candid, and candidate. When candor first appeared in English in the 14th century, it meant brightness or purity. Today, it shines as a word for truth spoken with refreshing honesty. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from KISS’s Gene Simmons: “Life is too short to have anything but delusional notions about yourself.” |
On a lighter note… What’s a cookie’s favorite rock band? OREO Speedwagon. |
