News Update

Community Calendar Report for Monday, October 6th, 2025

Now that the dust has settled on Michigan’s late-passed budget, here’s a look at winners and losers in the battle to get it done. Winners include the roads—with more than a billion dollars in new funding and long-term revenue plans, plus schools, which keep free meals for all students and see record per-pupil funding. Earmarks and arts programs also survived, with millions set aside for local projects and cultural groups. On the losing side: the marijuana industry, facing a new 24 percent wholesale tax, corporate incentive programs, which lost their annual $500 million boost, and more than 1,700 vacant state jobs that were cut. Lawmakers call the compromise imperfect—but say it delivers on key promises. The final plan awaits the governor’s signature, which is expected this week.

Starting Tuesday, Detroit residents will join a routine that’s become common in many other large cities: They’ll have to dial all ten digits—including the area code—for local calls. The change makes room for a new 679 overlay as the iconic 313 runs out of numbers. Seven-digit dialing ends October 7, as providers begin issuing 679 numbers November 7.

After a summer-like weekend, forecasters are warning northern Michigan could be in for a tough winter. AccuWeather’s long-range outlook points to early storms, heavy lake-effect snow, and the chance of another Polar Vortex late January or February. That means stretches of bitter cold and heating costs running higher than average. Meteorologists say the Midwest and Great Lakes are in the bullseye for multiple blasts of Arctic air—so get ready for an intense season ahead.

In sports, the Tiger’s path to a division title heads back to Detroit after a Mariners to a 3-2 win Sunday night tying the series at one game apiece. Games 3 and 4 are on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a possible Game 5 back in Seattle Friday.

Now, here’s a look at events happening on your Emerald Isle…

Looking ahead to highlights for next week…

The 18th will be the last day for large items at the transfer station until spring.  SO load ’em up and move ’em out now or plan to keep them for a while.

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Levi.  If that’s your name, come on into the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Kitty McNamara and Dom Halpin are our list today. Happy Birthday to Kitty and Dom, and if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you, too, from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays. But, let’s be careful out there—especially in the school zone.

On this date in 1972, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was officially dedicated. Created by Congress in 1966 as the nation’s first national lakeshore, it now covers over 73,000 acres along Lake Superior from Munising to Grand Marais. With its sandstone cliffs, beaches, waterfalls, dunes, and forests, the park is a year-round destination for hikers, campers, hunters, and sightseers—and today welcomes more than 400,000 visitors each year.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is embarrass (verb) [im-BAIR-us]. To embarrass someone is to make them feel confused and foolish in front of others—often so uncomfortable they freeze up, like a deer in headlights. That image connects neatly to the word’s origins. In the late 1500s, embarrass came into English from French meaning “to hamper or impede,” as if tying someone up. It traces back to the Portuguese verb embaraçar [em-bah-rah-SAH], built from baraça [bah-RAH-sah], meaning “noose” or “rope.” No wonder the word suggests being bound, restricted, or stuck—just like when embarrassment leaves you frozen in place.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday

Here’s a thought for the day from President Theodore Roosevelt, who is generally credited with creating the National Park system: “Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources… for they are sacred and more beautiful than anything man can build.”

On a lighter note…

Why was the lion full of embarrassment?

He swallowed his pride.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Monday, October 6th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
