News Update

Community Calendar Report for Wednesday, December 10th, 2025

The Petoskey City Council is expected to take up new outdoor lighting guidelines in early 2026, aimed at reducing light pollution and protecting dark skies. That’s according to reporting today in the News-Review. They say the planning commission recommended the ordinance in November after lengthy debate. The proposal follows DarkSky International standards and would guide architects and engineers on responsible lighting design. City planners say the goal is to keep skies visible while maintaining safe, well-lit public spaces. The Island’s Dark Sky group has been advocating for such ordinances in mainland communities that create light domes that can interfere with the Island’s Dark Skies.

Down in T-C, the Traverse Ticker reports that a local developer is proposing a new five-story hotel at Cherry Capital Airport. It would be built on forested land just east of the main parking lot along Fly Don’t Drive. The airport zoning board will review the project today. The first phase would include 89 rooms, with a rooftop bar and restaurant, and could open as early as spring of 2027.

Hundreds of early childhood educators in Northwest Michigan will be eligible to receive monthly wage stipends starting in January through a new state-funded initiative. Full-time educators wcan receive three hundred dollars a month, and part-time workers two hundred, continuing through August of 2027. The program is run by Networks Northwest and aims to attract and retain workers in the early childhood education workforce. There’s a link with information on applying for the program in today’s script online.

The Boat Company has cancelled today’s boat run.  They’ll make it up tomorrow with a trip to the Island leaving Charlevoix at 10:30 and a trip back leaving the Island dock at 1:20 p.m.

If you head across to Charlevoix today, you’ll find more lake effect snow there…maybe another inch or two, but down southeast of TC, they could get up to six inches, including along parts of 131 headed south. The snow will start this afternoon and be heaviest overnight into the morning on Thursday. And, if you are venturing downstate, you could see even more this afternoon with six to eight inches expected across the middle of the L-P from Manistee through Mount Pleasant to Midland, with rain and freezing rain in the lower third starting overnight tonight.

NAME OF DAY: Today’s BIC Center Name of the Day is Maureen.  If that’s your name, come into the BIC Center to pick out a free drink of your choice, courtesy of your friends at the BIC Center and WVBI.

BIRTHDAYS: Brogan Maudrie, Kaylee Timsak, Katie Donaldson and Melinda Burgess are on our list today. Happy Birthday to Melinda, Katie, Kaylee and Brogan and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The Island Beltway is running smoothly and there are no bridge delays. But, the roads are super slick with yet another fresh coat of snow so, let’s be careful out there, especially in the school zone.

On this day in 1901, the very first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden. Inventor Alfred Nobel funds the prizes through his will, hoping to be remembered not for weapons, but for honoring work that benefits humanity. Also on this date in 1948, the United Nations adopts the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Paris, setting global standards for freedom and dignity. And in 1967, singer Otis Redding dies in a plane crash in Wisconsin — just one day after recording Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay, which becomes his biggest hit.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is grift (verb) [GRIFT]. To grift means to cheat or swindle someone out of money or property using tricks or deceit, not force. A grifter might be a scammer, a crooked gambler, or a con artist. The word likely comes from graft, an older term tied to dishonest gain.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday

Here’s a thought for the day from Nobel Prize creator Alfred Nobel: “Good wishes alone will not ensure peace.”

On a lighter note…

What action figure is made for Christmas?
