Traverse City commissioners met last night and considered issues about some classic buildings owned by the city. The Traverse Ticker reports that there was unanimous support for using a request-for-proposals process to select future tenants for the Bijou by the Bay and the Carnegie Building, with a preference for nonprofits focused on arts, culture, or the environment. The Bijou has been vacant since last year, while the Carnegie needs major repairs. Commissioners also discussed rising maintenance costs at the historic City Opera House, including a new roof planned for this spring. Mainland first responders are urging the public to stay off the ice after two people died falling through on Island Lake in Kalkaska County over the weekend. A 22-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy were killed. Another teen survived. Officials warn ice remains thin and unpredictable and say no ice is truly safe right now. A Michigan Court of Claims judge has refused to block a new 24-percent wholesale tax on marijuana, clearing the way for it to take effect next month. Cannabis industry groups argue the tax is unconstitutional and improperly changes voter-approved law. The court ruled it is a separate tax — not an amendment — so a preliminary injunction against it was denied, but the challenge will be allowed to continue. If you have Christmas packages to get sent, the deadlines for on-time delivery are fast approaching. Lowest cost options start to go away on the 17th for FedEx, the 18th for U-P-S and the 19th for the Post Office. If you forget something until the last minute, FedEx with take it on Christmas Eve and get it there on Christmas…but it will cost you. |

On this day in 1935, the Detroit Lions win their first NFL championship, beating the New York Giants 26 to 7 in Detroit. It launches a golden era, with later titles in 1952, 1953, and 1957 — their most recent championship to date. This season, their playoff hopes are still alive — just barely — but as Lions fans know, hope springs eternal. Also on this date in 1965, proving that there is cause for hope, CBS worries A Charlie Brown Christmas will flop — with child actors, no laugh track, and a jazz score. Instead, it becomes an instant classic, airing every holiday season ever since reminding us what Christmas is all about. |

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is paltry (adjective) [PAWL-tree]. It describes something that’s too small to matter — or lacking real value or importance. A paltry amount isn’t worth much, and a paltry effort feels weak or careless. The word traces back to an old term meaning trash, and even today, paltry still carries that same idea of something disappointing or beneath expectations. |

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday… |

Here’s a thought for the day from Peanuts creator Charles Schulz: “Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today. It is already tomorrow in Australia.” |

On a lighter note… Why is Frosty never late? Time waits for snowman. |
