D-N-R officials were on Beaver Island yesterday for a community meeting on the D-N-R’s forest management plan. The proposal includes seven timber harvest projects across 240 acres of state land with a goal of boosting tree diversity and improving wildlife habitat. The D-N-R has also proposed deer management changes for the island, including extending the antlerless season by 20 days to reduce herd impacts on vegetation. Islanders have voiced mixed views on the projects—supporting deer population control but raising concerns about over-harvest, coyotes, as well as invasive species resulting from timber operations. Starting in November, the cooperative says bills will rise about $17 a month for the average residential member. The co-op faces $155 million in storm damage—40 times its normal yearly costs. Federal disaster aid remains uncertain, and state relief is still pending. G-L-E says that without more help, members could face additional rate hikes in 2025 and beyond. The increase affects 130,000 customers across 26 counties, including Beaver Island. In Lansing, Michigan lawmakers are racing the clock on the state budget. The Senate passed a transparency measure Monday requiring details on all earmark requests—like who’s asking, where the money’s going, and why. Nonprofits must also prove they’re established in Michigan. The move mirrors rules in the House, which celebrated the step. But big fights remain, including a plan to raise marijuana taxes to help fund $2 billion for roads—a proposal drawing sharp criticism and protests. With a shutdown looming at midnight Wednesday, negotiations are going down to the wire. The Michigan Court of Appeals has cleared South Haven of liability in the 2020 drowning of an 18-year-old man at South Beach. By a 2–1 vote, judges dismissed a wrongful death suit claiming the city failed to post red flags despite dangerous rip currents. Instead, yellow flags were up. The court ruled the beaches are run as a government function, not for profit, and thus shielded by immunity. A dissenting judge said the case should go to trial. The estate’s lawyers say they plan to appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court. And, over on the Leelanau Peninsula, the Leelanau Conservancy has raised $8 million in just two months to turn the long-abandoned Sugar Loaf ski resort into a nature preserve. With the land donated by its owner, plans call for trails and a summit pavilion with sweeping views. The group says community support shattered all fundraising records. |

Wednesday, Grand Marais is at Beaver Island to take on the B-I-C-S soccer and Volleyball squads. Games start at 12:30. At the BIC Center, there’s Bingo at 1:00 in the Hangout. And, there is BINGO at the G-F-C. Doors open for fellowship at 6:15. Games start at 7:00. Highlights for the rest of the week include… Thursday, at 9:00, there’s Pickleball on the Peaine Township Courts. At 10:00: The Trails Association is offering a guided hike lead by Cheryl Kern on the Kuebler Trail. Meet at the BIC Center. Also at 10:00, Tai Chi is in the Hangout at the BIC Center and there is Women’s Bible Study at the Christian Church. Thursday evenings are Burger & a Beer Night at the Shamrock, plus Thursday Night Euchre is back for the season, once again at the Whiskey Point Brewery. Cards hit the table at 7:00. Friday, Senior + Vets Coffee + Donuts is on at the BIC Center from 8:30 to 11:30. At 9:00, there’s Chair Strength Training in the Hangout at the BIC Center. There are 8 stops around the Island to pick up cards. Choose your five best. Entry fee is $50 with proceeds going to the annual Hoop Shoot Project at B-I-C-S. Fiero Coding Club is on at the library at 1:00. At 6:00 at the BIC Center the movie is The Road. It’s part of the library’s Big Read project on survival. You can check out the book to read at the library, too. Both the book and movie are award winners. They tell the story of a father and young son fighting to survive in a post apocalyptic U-S-A. The movie is rated R. [On the radio, tune in for Country Classics at 5:00 Saturday evening with host Sheri Timsak. At 7:00, Jackson Smith and Steve Girbach are in with Songs from the Trail.
