Community Calendar Report for Monday, September 29th, 2025

Grand Blanc Community Schools are closed today after yesterday’s deadly attack at a Latter-day Saints church there. Authorities say four people were killed and eight injured when a gunman rammed his car into the church, set it on fire, and opened fire with a rifle before being shot by police. The closure affects all 13 campuses, from preschool through high school, as the community grieves and investigators continue their work.

Munson Healthcare’s new Petoskey Community Health Center drew a packed crowd at its Sept. 25 open house. The News Review reports that visitors toured imaging suites, scheduled primary care visits, and filled the halls of the $17.7-million facility on Anderson Road. Munson says the center will boost access to care across Northern Michigan.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is warning Mackinac Island visitors about a Texas company accused of selling fake tickets online. The firm, MTVRS, allegedly runs websites mimicking official sites for Fort Mackinac and Shepler’s Ferry. Operators report visitors showing up with invalid email confirmations instead of real tickets. Nessel has ordered the company to stop or face legal action under the state’s Consumer Protection Act.

Native American entrepreneurs are invited to apply for the IndigiPitch Business Pitch Competition, set for December 5 at Odawa Casino in Petoskey. Applications are open until October 13. Finalists will pitch their businesses, showcase products, and compete for cash prizes — including $5,000 for first place — along with coaching and networking opportunities.

In sports, it was a weekend of highs and lows for Islanders soccer up on Mackinac. Friday night ended in a tough 7–3 loss despite two goals from senior co-captain Lysander McGinnity and another from freshman goalie Lucas Pease, who also made 10 big saves. But Saturday morning, the Islanders flipped the script. McGinnity scored twice, Parker DeLaat added another, and the team held firm to beat the Lakers 3–2 on a wet, slippery field—bringing home a big win against their island rival.

On the Island, the Elks had their weekly draw on Saturday, but the Queen of Hearts remains in hiding. Yvonne Crandall won the draw, but she picked the ten of spades.  The pot now sits at just over 34-thousand.

BIRTHDAYS: Kaylyn Jones, Zander Holmes and Grant Phillips are on our list today. Happy Birthday to Kaylyn, Zander and Grant and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you, too,  from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

On this date in 1817, the Treaty of Fort Meigs was signed, ceding Native lands to the United States. Article 16, championed by Chief Tontagini and supported by the Odawa, Ojibwa, and Potawatomi, granted 640 acres each to Ste. Anne’s Catholic Church and the brand-new “University of Michigania,” today’s University of Michigan. Historians call the Native gift as valuable as Harvard’s and Yale’s endowments. Though the gift was made with the though of education for native children, few benefited in the near term. More than 150 years later, a 1971 lawsuit revived the treaty’s promise of education. While the suit was unsuccessful, it  lead to Michigan creating the Indian Tuition Waiver in 1976, granting free tuition to eligible Native students.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is obliterate (verb) [uh-BLIT-uh-rayt]. To obliterate something is to destroy it completely so that nothing is left, to destroy utterly all trace, indication, or significance of it. It can also mean “to remove utterly from recognition or memory.” Our word was first used in the 1500s in the erasing from memory sense. It later described blotting out written words, then expanded to mean wiping out anything from existence. Doctors even used it for closing a vessel or passage in the body. Today, obliterate still carries all those shades of meaning — including canceling a postage stamp.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday

Here’s a thought for the day from Lech Wałęsa, who was born on this date in 1943: “Words are plentiful; deeds are precious.”

On a lighter note…

Why do ghosts love elevators?

Because it lifts their spirits.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Monday, September 29th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios, wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
