Community Calendar Report for Wednesday, October 1st, 2025. |
|
First some news… (summary of a 9 and 10 news story by Sheldon Krause) Facing a budget stalemate, Michigan’s government entered a partial shutdown, yet Governor Whitmer said state services would keep operating normally while lawmakers finalize an agreement. The funding plan includes $1.5 billion extra annually for roads, mostly funded by a proposed 24% wholesale tax on marijuana—which faces pushback from the cannabis industry for risking higher prices and black market growth. As of Tuesday night, the exact budget details remain undecided, though legislators say a final deal is close.
And here’s some news from the BIC Center: Time for Art is back! The new season starts October 8th at the BIC Center auditorium. |

On this date in 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, home of such natural wonders as Half Dome and the giant sequoia trees. Environmental trailblazer John Muir (1838-1914) and his colleagues campaigned for the congressional action, which was signed into law by President Benjamin Harrison and paved the way for generations of hikers, campers and nature lovers, along with countless “Don’t Feed the Bears” signs.

Here’s a thought for the day from Bohdi Sanders, “Focus on making yourself better, not on thinking that you are better.” |
|
On a lighter note…Don’t forget that the moon will be visible from Earth tonight. The last time this happened was last night. |
