About 120,000 Munson Healthcare patients are being notified that personal and medical data may have been exposed in a breach involving electronic records vendor Oracle Health, formerly Cerner. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says the incident highlights the need for stronger data breach notification laws. Munson says affected patients are being offered free credit monitoring while the investigation continues.

Meantime, Traverse City-based Hagerty was among eight insurance companies tied to a New York cybersecurity investigation after hackers exploited online quoting tools and exposed personal data from about 66,000 customers. Officials say stolen driver’s license information was later used to file fraudulent unemployment claims during the pandemic. Hagerty paid a $1.3 million settlement and says it continues investing in stronger data security protections.

On this date in 1934, the all-time low temperature for Michigan is recorded in Vanderbilt as the thermometer drops to minus 51 degrees, which is minus 46 Celsius. So, it turns out our winter really hasn’t been that bad. Indeed, according to Perdue University’s winter severity index as projected out by Michigan Storm Chasers…our winter has been average.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is fortuitous (Adjective) for-TOO-uh-tus]. Fortuitous usually describes something that happens by lucky chance. The word comes from the Latin fortuitus [for-TOO-ee-tus], meaning “happening by chance,” and shares roots with fors [fors], the Latin word for “chance.” While it originally meant simply accidental, today it often suggests good luck — though some language purists still debate that usage.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, who took to the Super Bowl halftime stage last night as Bad Bunny: “It doesn’t matter if you want to be a teacher, an astronaut, or a reggaeton singer, you need to study.”

On a lighter note…

Why did Bad Bunny take up gardening?
He likes to drop fresh beets.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Monday, February 9th, 2026. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
