Community Calendar Report For Tuesday, February 10, 2026

A police escort is returning the body of a Charlevoix man who was killed while volunteering with the Ukrainian military; the escort route through northern Michigan was scheduled yesterday, with public viewing to follow at Charlevoix Township Hall starting Feb. 11
The Michigan DNR issued its weekly “News Digest” for the week of Feb. 9, 2026, summarizing items like donated deer hearts for research, free fishing opportunities, and an upcoming Natural Resources Commission meeting that may interest northern Michigan residents Michigan.gov/dnr
 
The Beaver Island Irish Heritage Group and the BIC Center have just announced a musical kick-off to Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations on the Island. Ben Traverse and Nick Veine will take the BIC Center stage Thursday, March 12th at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20, kids 17 and under get in free with an adult. There’ll be cabaret seating, do bring snacks, a meal and your own libations to get the party started. Tickets are on sale now at tickets dot bic center dot org.

First your meeting planner…
Transportation Authority meets today at noon.  Saint James Township Board meets Wednesday at 5:30. Their Public Woreks Committee meets Thursday at 10:00. A-A meets Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 6:00. Locations and more details are in the calendar entires online. That’s it on the meeting front through the end of the week.
 
On the fun front today…
In our Dark Skies,  Wednesday morning, the waning crescent moon will be near the bright red star Antares. It’s the brightest star in the constellation of Scorpius the Scorpion. There’s more info at dark sky island dot org.

Tuesday Valentine Spirit Week continues at school. Today, wear anything with Hearts. Talking Threads is on at the Peaine Township Hall at 9:30. At 10:00, Babes & Toddlers mix it up at the library and there is Pickleball in the Theater at the BIC Center and, at 10:30, there’s Chair Strength Training up in the Hangout. At 2:15 there’s a Home School Meet-up at the library.  And evening Pickleball is back starting at 5:00 in the Theater at the BIC Center.

Highlights for the rest of the week include…
 
Wednesday, the Islanders boys squad heads up to Grand Marais for make-up games at 10:00. At school, Valentine Spirit Week continues. Students can wear anything red, white or pink. At the BIC Center, there’s BINGO at 1:00. At Peaine Township Hall there is Art Therapy at 3:00. And at 5:00 it’s Time for Art, at the BIC Center.  This week the last of three sessions on making Madi Gras masks lead by Cindy Ricksgers.
Thursday its is Duo Day for Valentine Spirit Week at school. Dress as your favorite duo or couple. Women’s Bible Study is on at 10:00 at the Christian Church. There’s Pickleball at the BIC Center at 10:00 in the Theater and over at Peaine Township Hall, Cardio Drumming also at 10:00. Also at 10:00 up in the Hangout there’s Senior Tai Chi. Thursday evening, there’s more Pickleball. That’s right: end of day Pickleball starting at 5:00 in the Theater at the BIC Center. Afterwards, you can grab the burger & a beer special at the Shamrock starting at 5:00, and its Euchre Night down at Whiskey Point Brewing. Cards hit the table at 7:00.
[Thursday evening on the radio, drop in for W-V-B-I’s newest music show. It’s The Underground with Leila Freijy. It’s the underground sound of grunge and more from the 80s and 90s with special features every week. Tune in at 7:00 for two hours Underground.]
Friday, the Islanders Basketball squads head up to Lake State for the Northern Lights League tournament play. They’ll be away through Saturday. At school, Valentine Spirit Week continues with a wear your school colors day. On the Island, Senior + Vets Coffee & Donuts is at the BIC Center from 9:00 to 11:00.  There’s Pickleball at 10:00 and Chair Strength Training at 10:30.

At 9:00pm, tune into “The Titus Jennings Experience” offering music from all genres, followed by “The Midnight Special” with Marilyn Rea Beyer at 11:00pm for music, farce comedy, and late-night escape.]
Saturday, the Fiero Code Club is on at the library at 1:00. There are two movies showing at the BIC Center, both takes on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. The 3:00 show is Gnomeo & Juliet. Separated by a garden fence and a feud, are blue gnomes on one side and red gnomes on the other. This doesn’t stop blue Gnomeo and red Juliet from falling in love with each other. Do they have a future together?
It’s rated PG. At 6:00 Leonardo DiCaprio is opposite Claire Danesit’s in a modern take on the play. It’s a modern take on the classic story set in the hip modern suburb of Verona but retaining Shakespeare’s original dialogue. It’s rated PG-13. And, remember, Saturdays are Prime Rib Night at the Shamrock.
[On the radio, tune in for Country Classics at 5:00 Saturday evening with host Sheri Timsak. At 7:00, take a trip back to the best of the 80s and 90s with the Mix Tape show (that’s a 120-minute TDK cassette tape for those in the know) hosted by WVBI’s Adam Pettigrew. Mark Beltaire takes over at 9:00 with Rockin’ the Boat and continues at 10:00 with the Blues Cruise. Cousin Dan wraps up the evening with the Too Good Radio Show starting at 11:00.]
 
Sunday, there are services at the Christian Church at 10:00 and mass at Holy Cross at 12:15.
