Community Calendar For Wednesday, March 5, 2025

Community Calendar Report for Wednesday March 5th, 2025.
First, some news…
From Michigan News Connection – Toxic algae blooms are closing more lake beaches each summer. While climate change plays a role, new research shows human activities such as agriculture and runoff are key drivers, making some lakes more vulnerable than others. Here is the story from Chrystal Blair –

Good news for local robotics fans! Our very own BICS’s Team BIRobot is crossing the border this weekend, heading to their first competition of 2025. The team is traveling to Niagara College in Welland, Ontario – marking their first-ever venture outside Michigan’s robotics district.

Here’s something different this year – the competition schedule has changed. Unlike previous years when events typically ran Fridays and Saturdays, this competition runs Saturday and Sunday. The team will set up their pit area Friday evening, compete throughout the weekend, and make their journey back home on Monday.

Want to learn more about Team #6098 or show your support? Visit their website at birobot.org where you can become a sponsor or pick up some team gear. And if you’d like to cheer them on from home, you can follow their competition progress and watch livestreams through TheBlueAlliance.com.
We wish our Beaver Island robotics team the best of luck as they represent our community across the border!

[And, here’s a way to send special birthday wishes to someone on the island:  The B-I-C-S National Honor Society will put up a sign in their yard in exchange for a donation of $10 or more to the Build a Cure for Cancer fund. Contact N-H-S president Alyssa Martin for more details. You can reach her through the front desk at school.]
TRAFFIC: None. But the roads are super slick after the snow and glaze of icing yesterday. So, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.
On this day in 1966, a military tune called “The Ballad Of The Green Berets” by Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler topped the charts! Imagine that – a pro-military song hitting #1 while Americans were shipping out to Vietnam.
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day
Schadenfreude (SHAH-dun-froy-duh) refers to a feeling of enjoyment that comes from seeing or hearing about the troubles of other people.
// Schadenfreude was felt by many viewers when the arrogant contestant was voted off the show.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday…
Here’s a thought for the day – no matter how simple it may seem, gratitude transforms ordinary moments into treasures.
On a lighter note – did you know that eye drops are technically blinker fluid.
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, March 5th, 2025. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
