Community Calendar Report for Thursday March 6th, 2025. |
First, some news… The state of Michigan recently announced that 32 projects will share $3.6 million in funding through the Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program for efforts that address the prevention, detection, eradication and control of aquatic (water-based) and terrestrial (land-based) invasive species. Some of the funds will go towards surveying and treating hemlock woolly adelgid on the northern edge of the infestation in Antrim, Charlevoix and Emmet counties along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Good news for local robotics fans! Our very own BICS’s Team BIRobot is crossing the border this weekend, heading to their first competition of 2025. The team is traveling to Niagara College in Welland, Ontario – marking their first-ever venture outside Michigan’s robotics district. Here’s something different this year – the competition schedule has changed. Unlike previous years when events typically ran Fridays and Saturdays, this competition runs Saturday and Sunday. The team will set up their pit area Friday evening, compete throughout the weekend, and make their journey back home on Monday. Want to learn more about Team #6098 or show your support? Visit their website at birobot.org where you can become a sponsor or pick up some team gear. And if you’d like to cheer them on from home, you can follow their competition progress and watch livestreams through TheBlueAlliance.com. We wish our Beaver Island robotics team the best of luck as they represent our community across the border! |

On this day in 1899 The German company Bayer patents aspirin on March 6, 1899. Now the most common drug in household medicine cabinets, acetylsalicylic acid was originally made from a chemical found in the bark of willow trees. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine, beginning in ancient Greece when Hippocrates used it to relieve pain and fever. Known to doctors since the mid-19th century, it was used sparingly due to its unpleasant taste and tendency to damage the stomach. |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day Askew – Askew means “not straight” or “at an angle,” and can be used as both an adjective and an adverb. // The picture on the cabin wall was slightly askew. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday… |
Here’s a thought for the day – “Instead of worrying about what you cannot control, shift your energy to what you can create.” |
On a lighter note – If you have ever lost a TV controller there’s a chance you’ll find it in a remote location |
