News Update

Community Calendar For Friday March 7, 2025

Community Calendar Report for Friday March 7th, 2025.

First, some news…

Environmental groups are already worried about Holtec International’s plans to revive Michigan’s Palisades Nuclear Plant – now the company says it will pioneer the nation’s first small modular reactors (SMRs) to be installed within five years.

Here’s Chrystal Blair with the Michigan News Connection with the story

Good news for local robotics fans! Our very own BICS’s Team BIRobot is crossing the border this weekend, heading to their first competition of 2025. The team is traveling to Niagara College in Welland, Ontario – marking their first-ever venture outside Michigan’s robotics district.

Here’s something different this year – the competition schedule has changed. Unlike previous years when events typically ran Fridays and Saturdays, this competition runs Saturday and Sunday. The team will set up their pit area Friday evening, compete throughout the weekend, and make their journey back home on Monday.

Want to learn more about Team #6098 or show your support? Visit their website at birobot.org where you can become a sponsor or pick up some team gear. And if you’d like to cheer them on from home, you can follow their competition progress and watch livestreams through TheBlueAlliance.com.

We wish our Beaver Island robotics team the best of luck as they represent our community across the border!

TRAFFIC: None. But the roads are super slick after the snow and glaze of icing yesterday. So, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone.

On this day in 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for his revolutionary new invention: the telephone.

The Scottish-born Bell worked in London with his father, Melville Bell, who developed Visible Speech, a written system used to teach speaking to the deaf. In the 1870s, the Bells moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where the younger Bell found work as a teacher at the Pemberton Avenue School for the Deaf. He later married one of his students, Mabel Hubbard.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day – Career To career is to go at top speed especially in a headlong manner.

// The tourists gripped their seats and exchanged anxious looks as the bus careered along the narrow roads.

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Friday

Here’s a thought for the day – If every day at work feels like a Friday, then you are doing what you were meant to do.” — Alan W. Kennedy

On a lighter note – A man left a note on his refrigerator that read, Gone to the pub for an hour. If I’m not back, please read this note again.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Friday, March 7th, 2025. I’m Greg Doig reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
