| From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Tuesday, March 10th, 2020. |
| First, some news…
Boys Islander basketball squad is back from District Playoffs. They played hard yesterday, but fell to Alanson 59-38. It was a great showing for one of the strongest teams the islanders have fielded in a number of years. For the season the team was 11 and 5. Senior John Robert is the only retiring member of the squad, so it looks like the team will come out of the gat strong for next year.
The BICS HOSA team was in Traverse City competing at a regional event yesterday. Team includes Susi Meyers, clinical nursing; Skylar Marsh, behavioral Health, McKenna Turner, Medical Match and Sharon Schwartzfisher, Personal Care.
Thursday, B-I Robot, the B-I-C-S robotics teams heads off to their first district event in Alpena. Is their robot done? Not quite yet, but it will be Wednesday morning in time for its flight off the island. Midnight oil will be burned tonight.
In other news, Michigan Senator Wayne Schmidt was in town yesterday. He attended some March is Reading month events at school and met with island residents on various issues of concern.
Finally, this from the Transfer Station. They want you to know about some changing policies. They’ll now only be accepting free brush from island residents on the last week of May and the first week of October. Commercial users will continue to pay as usual. And, the transfer station is no longer accepting drop off of bulk metal or drywall in the storage areas out back. Get in touch with Bob Marsh with any questions. |

| TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. Critter count this morning: One deer. Roads are still really slick as our freeze thaw cycles continue. Sidewalks treacherous. So, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone. |
| BIRTHDAYS: Marissa Crandall, Jeff Connor, Killian McGinnity, and Delva Burton are celebrating today. Happy birthday to each of them and, if we missed you on the list today, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
| ON THIS DAY in 1959 there is a massive uprising in Chinese-occupied Tibet. Tensions come to a head after 10 years of Chinese occupation, as some 300,000 Tibetans, fearful that the Dalai Lama is about to be kidnapped, surround his palace in Lhasa to protect him. |
| WORD OF THE DAY: escapade (ESS-kuh-payd) which means a usually adventurous action that runs counter to approved or conventional conduct. When it was first used in English, escapade referred to an act of escaping or fleeing from confinement or restraint. The relationship between escape and escapade does not end there. Both words derive from the Vulgar Latin verb excappare, meaning “to escape,” a product of the Latin prefix ex- and the Late Latin noun cappa, meaning “head covering or cloak.” While escape took its route through Anglo-French and Middle English, however, escapade made its way into English by way of the Spanish escapar (“to escape”) and the French escapade. | Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday… |
| Here’s a thought for the day “Sometimes what we think of as an error can be the start of something even more interesting.”
And, on a lighter note: Why did the ghost cross the road? Because it was a poultry-geist. |
