| BIRTHDAYS: Joe Reed is celebrating today. Happy birthday to Joe and, if we missed you on the list today, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
| ON THIS DAY in 1918 the deadliest flu pandemic in recorded history begins. Hundreds of soldiers at Fort Riley, Kansas, are sick with a virulent form of influenza, prompting the first reporting of the epidemic. The flu will go on to infect some 500 million people and kill between 50 million and 100 million, according to most estimates. To be clear, nothing like that is predicted for Coronavirus 19. |
| WORD OF THE DAY: Byzantine (BIZ-un-teen) which means:
1 : of, relating to, or characteristic of the ancient city of Byzantium 2 architecture : of, relating to, or having the characteristics of a style of architecture developed in the Byzantine Empire 3 Christianity : of or relating to the churches using a traditional Greek rite and subject to Eastern canon law 4 and, when not capitalized: of, relating to, or characterized by a devious and usually surreptitious manner of operation—also, : intricately involved : labyrinthine Today, the city that lies on the Bosporus Strait in Turkey is named Istanbul, but it was once known as Constantinople (a name given to it when it became the capital of the Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire), and in ancient times, it was called Byzantium. Its history is exotic—filled with mystics, wars, and political infighting—and over time the word Byzantine (from Late Latin Byzantinus, the name for a native of Byzantium) became synonymous with anything characteristic of the city or empire, from architecture to intrigue. The figurative sense referring to a devious manner of operation first appeared in the late 1930s. It was popularized by frequent use in reference to the Soviet Union, whose secrecy and despotism were equated by Westerners with what went on in the old Byzantine Empire. (merriam-webster.com) |
| Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday… |
| Here’s a thought for the day from John Steinbeck “I wonder how many people I’ve looked at all my life and never seen.”
And, on a lighter note: Why did the banana go to the doctor? Because he wasn’t peeling well. |
