| TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. Critter count this morning: One deer. Roads are still really slick as our freeze thaw cycles continue. Sidewalks treacherous. So, let’s be careful out there. Especially in the school zone. |
| BIRTHDAYS: None today, but over the weekend Joyce Runberg, Mike Collins, Nathan La Vasseur, Denni Cady , Cheri Philips and Rob Turner, Happy birthday to each of them and, if we missed you on the list today, Happy Birthday to you, too, from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
| ON THIS DAY in 1862 World’s first iron-clad naval battle. Steam-powered, iron-clad warships in the American Civil War, the Union’s USS Monitor and the Confederate’s CSS Virginia, fire on each other for four hours off Hampton Roads, Virginia. The engagement of iron-fortified battleships ends in a draw. |
| WORD OF THE DAY: devise (dih-VYZE) which means:
1 a : to form in the mind by new combinations or applications of ideas or principles : invent b : to plan to obtain or bring about : plot 2 : to give (real estate) by will There’s something inventive about devise, a word that stems from Latin dividere, meaning “to divide.” By the time devise began being used in early Middle English, its Anglo-French forebear deviser had accumulated an array of senses, including “divide,” “distribute,” “arrange,” “array,” “digest,” “order,” “plan,” “invent,” “contrive,” and “assign by will.” English adopted most of these and added some new senses over the course of time, such as “imagine,” “guess,” “pretend,” and “describe.” In modern use, we’ve disposed of a lot of the old meanings, but we have kept the one that applies to wills; devise has traditionally referred to the transfer of real property (land), and bequeath to personal property. These days, this devise is most often recognized as applying generally to all the property in a person’s estate. (merriam-webster.com) |
| Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday… |
| Here’s a thought for the day from Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley: “I do not wish women to have power over men, but over themselves.”
And, on a lighter note: What do bees do if they need a ride? Wait at the buzz stop! |
