News Update

Community Calendar for Thursday, March 31st, 2022

From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Thursday, March 31st, 2022.

Now, some news…

Steady waves of rain, sleet, freezing and now snow have made a mess of the roads and sidewalks out there. As a result, the Community Center will be closed again today. Meantime, after the ice yesterday knocked us off of FM for a good chunk of the day, the warmer temperatures and rain as night fell knocked the ice off and we are back on FM. Right now we are seeing snow over most of the island, while the near-shore mainland is enjoying a mix of rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow. So, we are probably a no-fly zone for awhile.  Things will probably be a mess through the end of the day, with things clearing up tomorrow…and some sun on the way on Sunday.

The state’s latest COVID-19 data update was pretty much all good news. Only thing lurking in it is an increase in positive test rates with notes that the latest virus variant is starting to show-up. Reports are that it is even more transmissible than the omicron variant—but apparently no more threatening. Still, Michigan health officials are watching with caution. Latest report brings the seven-day running averages to 626 for new cases and 17 for deaths…that’s statewide. In Charlevoix, there were no new cases or deaths. Hospital utilization data all look good.

And, given that ice is in the news, we’ll note this: Reports are that the Red Wings have fired their long-term Zamboni driver. He had the job for 51 years.  No word on what went wrong. Apparenly his ice is no longer good enough.

Finally in the news, we mentioned the prospect of Northern Lights showing up this evening.  Latest forecasts remain good on that front, but our issue will likely be clouds.  Things aren’t supposed to clear out until midday Friday.  So, even if there is a show, we might miss it.  Still, if you want to take a peak, current forecasts say the best time will be around midnight tonight.

Here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…

Here’s your meeting planner for next week: Just one showing up—the B-I-E-S-A meets today at 1:00 at the Peaine Township Hall. Nothing else on the calendar right now.  Meeting details are in the calendar entries online.

On the fun front today, well…no events at the BIC Center unless the weather lets up. Watch Facebook for details for what’s on and off, and we’ll have info here on WVBI as well.  Right now, Euchre is still on deck at Whiskey Point Brewing Company. Cards hit the table at 7:00.

Friday,  Pickleball is on—in the Theater at the BIC Center at 10:00. Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30 and at noon it’s C-O-A’s winter BINGO game also here at the BIC Center.

Saturday, there’s an evening movie at the BIC Center at 7:00. It’s the Rom-com Marry me with Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. Great reviews. Rated PG-13. Concession stand will be open. Trailer is on the BIC Center website at bic center dot org.

Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship.  Times and more details are in the calendar.

Monday, Chair Yoga is on up ion the Hangout.  Start time is 10:00.

Tuesday, Tai Chi is on up in the Hangout at 9:30. Pickleball is on at 10:00 in the Theater. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. And, Tuesday evening, Open Mic Night returns to the Bodega. Signup at 6:30. Performances begin at 7:00.  There’s be special snacks for a freewill donation and the regular Bodega menu available.

Wednesday, Nothing but Needles is on at the Peaine Township Hall. That event for crafters starts at 9:00. Also, it’s C-O-A’s Chair Yoga at 10:30. Wednesday evening it’s Time for Art at the BIC Center with Cindy Ricksgers. Start time is 5:00.

BIRTHDAYS:  None on the list today, but, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center.

TRAFFIC:  None, nada, zip.  But let’s be careful out there.

ON THIS DAY in 1889 the Eiffel Tower officially opens. Towering nearly a thousand feet over the streets of Paris, Gustave Eiffel’s monument to the centenary of the French Revolution is formally dedicated. Many French intellectuals deem it an eyesore, but it will come to be regarded as a harbinger of the modern age and a cultural icon of France.

WORD OF THE DAY: malleable (adjective) [MAL-ee-uh-bul] which means “capable of being shaped, altered, or controlled by outside forces or influences.” Malleable comes from the Latin verb malleare, meaning “to hammer.” Malleare itself comes from the Latin word for “hammer,” malleus. If you have guessed that maul and mallet, other English words for specific types of hammers, are related to malleus, you have hit the nail on the head.

Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday …

Here’s a thought for the day:  “If you make listening and observation your occupation, you will gain much more than you can by talk.”

On a lighter note: What do you get when you combine a baseball field with a golf course?  A diamond in the rough.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Thursday, March 31st, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
