From our Langford Family studios on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Wednesday, March 30th, 2022. |
First a programming note: Icing on our antenna has us off the air on FM this morning. Our streaming service is up theough and we’ll return to on-air operations as soon as conditions permit. Now, some news… The Great Lakes Boat Building School up in Cedarville is the recipient of a 2.7 million dollar CARES Act grant to expand their school. They say they plan to double the number of graduates they are generating—moving from 24 to 50 fulltime students, and that they may then move to 100 graduates a year. The grant will fund the construction of a new classroom building and allow the addition of a marine electronics program. The Charlevoix City Council has a rejected a plan to landscape the area along the Pine River Channel. Apparently the plan met with resistance similar to the scuttled fireplace proposal with concerns about erosion among other things. The design incorporated native flowers, bushes and trees as well as patio areas for sitting and gathering to watch boats travel through the channel and the sunset. If you are interested in learning more about flying drones as part of a career, N-C-M-C has a Luncheon Lecture coming up about that. It’s on Friday and will be available by Zoom. Check today’s script or the calendar entry for info on signing up. https://www.ncmclifelonglearning.com/event-4628608/Registration Finally in the news, three energy eruptions on the Sun yesterday have a series of energy waves headed towards the Earth that may make for Northern Lights displays late tomorrow night or early Friday morning. NOAA says, “Forecast confidence of an Earth-directed component is moderate, while there is less confidence in timing and intensity. |

BIRTHDAYS: Ryan Belfy is celebrating today. Happy Birthday to Ryan…and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you from all of us at W-V-B-I and your Beaver Island Community Center. |
TRAFFIC: None, nada, zip. But let’s be careful out there. |
ON THIS DAY in 1867 Secretary of State William Seward purchases 586,412 square miles of land in the far northwest of Russian America. Many say “Seward’s icebox” isn’t worth $7.2 million, but the future state of Alaska will turn out to be a bargain. Three years later on this date in 1870 the 15th Amendment is adopted giving African American men the right to vote. It will be another 50 years before American women of any race also win the right to vote. |
WORD OF THE DAY: chagrin (noun) [shuh-GRIN] which refers to “a distress of mind caused by humiliation, disappointment, or failure.” Chagrin comes from French, in which it means “grief,” “sorrow,” or essentially the same thing as English’s chagrin, and in which it is also an adjective meaning “sad.” |
Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Wednesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from R-J Intindola: “Improving your future requires study of the past; we learn traveling through life and especially from mistakes that provide lessons we should not repeat.” On a lighter note: What keeps a sheep up at night? A Velcro fence. |
That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for this Beaver Island Wednesday, March 30th, 2022. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day—and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And, thanks for listening. |
