Beaver Island Community School resumed in-person classes yesterday for secondary students with masking requirements back in place. The annual Banquet and BASH will proceed Saturday evening as planned with the requirement that either you test Saturday or wear a mask except while eating or outside on the boat. Single Stream recycling is now in the Bag for the Transfer station. That’s the word from Waste Management Committee Chair Paul Cole. He says new procedures will start in June. No longer will it be necessary to sort your cardboard from your plastic from your glass. Instead, you just bring all of your recyclables in together and put them in the bin. You’ll still need to put your garbage in green bags and keep it separate. The new single stream process is expected to increase the island’s already high recycling rates. The Transfer Station, with assistance from Charlevoix County, invested just under $60,000 in new specialized equipment to create the single-stream operation. The Station’s single stream recycling equipment can sort and process several tons of recyclable items each month. A few reminders for you: Michigangers are now eligible for another eight free COVID test kits. You can order yours online at COVIDtests.gov. Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island… Here’s your meeting planner for next week: There’s a Joint Planning Commission meeting on Monday at 3:30 at Peaine Township Hall. And Tuesday, the County Commissioners will be here for a visit and meeting. They are making a trip down to the south-end Light in the morning and then will hold an open meeting at Peaine Township Hall on at noon. Thursday at 2:00 is the regular time for the monthly Emergency Services Authority meeting out at Peaine Township Hall—but right now it isn’t showing on the Township Calendar. We’ll follow up on that for next week. Next Saturday morning, that’s the 28th, there’s an Elks club meeting on the calendar for 9:00 in the morning at the Peaine Township Hall. That’s it for the week. Meeting details are in the calendar entries online. On the fun front today, Friday, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30. And, at 12:30 it is time for BINGO brought to you by the C-O-A. Saturday, Pickleball is on 10 to noon. The evening movie at the BIC Center is Dog. Great family film starring Channing Tatum rated PG-13. Concession stand will be open for snacks, a meal or both. Trailer is on the BIC Center website at bic center dot org. Also Saturday evening, it’s time for the B-I-C-S High School Banquet and BASH, a special dinner for students, teachers and invited guests followed by dancing and fun. Amidst it all, there’ll be a ride on the Emerald Isle. Come on down to the dock and wish the kids well. Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship. Times and more details are in the calendar. Monday, Chair Yoga is scheduled up in the Hangout. Start time is 10:00 Tuesday, Pickleball is on at 10:00 over on the Municipal Tennis Courts. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout. And, Tai Chi is on up in the Hangout but instead of at 9:30, it is at 3 this afternoon. Wednesday, senior Chair Yoga is on up in the Hangout at the BIC Center at 10:30. And, Wednesday afternoon at 5:00 it is Time for Art at the BIC Center. Thursday, Tai Chi is on at the BIC Center at 9:30. Pickleball is on, too, outside on tennis courts from 10 to noon. Games Galore is on up on the Hangout from 1:00 to 4:00. |
