The latest data from the state shows a continue surge in new cases—running at almost double the rate it was at the end of April—but fairly steady numbers for hospitalizations and deaths. TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outboand to the airports. The Island beltway is running smoothly. The bridges are clear. But, as the leaves pop out, lots of blind corners are developing. So, let’s be careful out there. |

ON THIS DAY in 1963, excerpts from a letter written by Martin Luther King Jr. while in jail for civil disobedience are published in the New York Post. The publication of the forceful “Letter from Birmingham Jail” inspires both debate and devotion to King’s cause. Also on this date in 1992 Amy Fisher shoots Mary Jo Buttafuoco. Fisher is allegedly having an affair with Mary Jo’s husband, Joey Buttafuoco. Mary Jo Buttafuoco is injured but survives the attack. Fisher will spend seven years in prison for shooting Buttafuoco, and the sensational Buttafuoco story will become the subject of multiple TV movies as well as annual radio reports that delight in repeating the name Buttafuoco. |

MERRIAM-WEBSTER WORD OF THE DAY: kibosh (noun) [KYE-bosh], which refers to something that serves as a check or stop. It is usually used in the phrase “put the kibosh on.” Evidence of kibosh dates the word to only a few years before Charles Dickens used it in an 1836 sketch, but despite kibosh being relatively young in English its source is elusive. Claims were once made that it was Yiddish, despite the absence of a plausible Yiddish source. Another hypothesis pointed to Irish caidhp bhais, literally, coif (or cap) of death, explained as headgear a judge put on when pronouncing a death sentence, or as a covering pulled over the face of a corpse when a coffin was closed. But evidence for any metaphorical use of this phrase in Irish is lacking, and kibosh is not recorded in English as spoken in Ireland until decades after Dickens’ use. More recent source theories include a heraldic term for an animal’s head when born with only its face fully showing, and an Arabic word meaning “whip, lash,” but no theory has sufficient evidence to back it—and they all have the kibosh put on them. |
|
Now, to wrap up for this for Beaver Island Thursday…with no kibosh on anything… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from Martin Luther King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail: “Shallow understanding from people of goodwill is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.” On a lighter note: Why didn’t the greens cross the road? They didn’t want to be road kale. |
