The B-I-C-S year end Banquet and Bash turned out well Saturday night. Dinner provided by the Bodega was delicious, the lake was calm for the traditional ride on the Emerald Isle after dinner and then lots of fun was had at school until the wee hours of the morning. Seniors McKenna Turner and Jared Robert were feted after dinner by their classmates. McKenna heads to Notre Dame this fall to study architecture and Jared is of to Western Michigan to study physics.
Elementary and pre-school students are returning to in person classes today at B-I-C-S. Masks are required when students are moving about in common areas, but not after they are settled into class unless they are working in small groups. Same process applies to secondary students—dropping from the mask up all the time rule that applied when they came back to in person classes last Thursday.
Gaylord residents continue to claw their way back to some sense of normal after an E-F three tornado ripped through the heart of their town on Friday. Authorities say that all persons have been accounted for and that the death toll stands at two. Power has been restored to 99 percent of locations and clean-up efforts are well underway with the community pulling together to help out those in need.
The Coast Guard is warning boaters about using E-15 gas in boats. Normally that type of fuel isn’t available in the summer, but the Biden administration authorized its production this summer in an effort to offset high gas prices. In addition to causing more smog when used in warm weather, it can cause fires in engines that aren’t designed to use it—which includes most gasoline boat engines says the Coast Guard. They say you should be sure the fuel you are putting in your boat has no more than 10% ethanol in it.
At the transfer station, single stream processing is up and running. You can now bring plastic, glass and paper together to dump in the recycle bins. They are still collecting big cardboard boxes and aluminum separately though—boxes to deal with the bulk and the cans because they can be turned in for the deposits. Also, this week, they are taking household yard waste for free at the transfer station—so it’s a good time to get out and clean up the yard.
Be ware of ticks, though—that according to Veterinarian Dr. Jeff Powers. He says they are especially prevalent this year. So, check yourself and your pets. Be sure your pets are protected and if you find a tick on yourself, experts say you should hold on to it for testing if need be. Drop it in an old medicine bottle and seal it up until you check in with your healthcare provider.

Now, here’s a look at what’s happening on your island…
Here’s your meeting planner for the week: There had been a Joint Planning Commission meeting on Monday at 3:30 at Peaine Township Hall, but that has been cancelled out of COVID-19 concerns. Tomorrow, the Charlevoix County Commissioners will be here for a visit and meeting. They are making a trip down to the south-end Light in the morning and then will hold an open meeting at Peaine Township Hall on at noon. Thursday at 2:00 is the regular time for the monthly Emergency Services Authority meeting out at Peaine Township Hall—but right now it isn’t showing on the Township Calendar. We’ll follow up on that for next week. Next Saturday morning, that’s the 28th, there’s an Elks club meeting on the calendar for 9:00 in the morning at the Peaine Township Hall. That’s it for the week. Meeting details are in the calendar entries online.
On the fun front today, Monday, Chair Yoga is scheduled up in the Hangout. Start time is 10:30.
Tuesday, Pickleball is on at 10:00 over on the Municipal Tennis Courts. The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program is on at 10:30 in the Hangout.
Wednesday, senior Chair Yoga is on up in the Hangout at the BIC Center at 10:30. And, Wednesday afternoon at 5:00 it is Time for Art at the BIC Center. That will be the last session until fall as we head into the busy summer season.
Thursday, Tai Chi is on at the BIC Center at 9:30. Pickleball is on, too, outside on tennis courts from 10 to noon. Games Galore is on up on the Hangout from 1:00 to 4:00.
Friday, the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is on up in the Hangout at 10:30. And, at 12:30 it is time for BINGO brought to you by the C-O-A. Warblers on the Water participants will start arriving Friday with a welcoming at the BIC Center available as they come in. And, of course, Friday kicks off Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start to summer on the island.
Saturday, Pickleball is on 10 to noon. At 5:00 at the BIC Center there’s a presentation on butterflies and warblers in the Theater. And, Saturday evening at 7:00 the first annual Edward Palmer “Is Everyone Happy” party kicks off over in the Holy Cross Hall. Dancing, island music, food and more are planned. Check the BIC Center ticket store for links to get your ticket to attend.
Sunday there are services at Holy Cross, the Christian Church, and the Lighthouse fellowship. Times and more details are in the calendar.
Next weekend, there’ll be two great live performances at the BIC Center. Friday evening it’s the Byrne Brothers with Irish songs, Irish dance and general Irish shenanigans. Saturday night is the first event in the new Beaver Island Jazz series brought to you by the Beaver Island Performing Arts Alliance and the BIC Center. Mark Ortwein and his Jazztet will be here with great charts and their innovative style. It’s jazz with a new and lively twist and distinctive sound. Showtime both evenings is 7:30.
