Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a new law cutting Michigan income taxes on tips, overtime pay, and Social Security for the next three years. The plan exempts about 300,000 tipped workers and 500,000 overtime earners, saving them roughly $400 to $500 a year. Around 40,000 seniors will also see tax relief on Social Security. Whitmer says the goal is to put more money back into Michiganders’ pockets. The tax breaks will expire after 2028 unless lawmakers act to extend them — a move expected to cost the state about $158 million in revenue next year. Meantime, Michigan’s new state budget includes $14 million to restore forests devastated by last spring’s massive ice storm. The DNR says nearly a quarter of the state forest system was damaged, affecting wildlife habitat, recreation areas, and timber harvests. The new funding will kickstart large-scale replanting across northern Michigan — helping forests recover, wildlife return, and communities rebuild after the storm. The Soo Evening News reports today that American and Canadian students are teaming up to protect the Great Lakes from oil spills. At Lake Superior State University’s Center for Freshwater Research and Education — working with Algoma University across the border — they’re running open-air experiments to see how oil affects freshwater life, from plants to fish. Most oil-spill research has focused on oceans, but the Great Lakes face daily risks from pipelines and shipping. By testing different oils in outdoor tanks, students are learning how spills spread, how long recovery takes, and which cleanup methods work best — vital knowledge to safeguard one of the world’s largest sources of fresh water. Interlochen Public Radio’s Points North Show from Friday featured a look at the unique varieties of apples available on the Island and why that could be important to the survival of apples all over the world. There’s a link in today’s script online if you’d like to hear it. https://www.interlochenpublicradio.org/podcast/points-north/2025-10-10/how-bout-them-apples Saturday’s winning ticket in the Elks Queen of Hearts game belonged to The Herd! On this date in 1773, while searching the skies for celestial objects that might mislead comet seekers, French astronomer Charles Messier finds a cluster of stars that will later be named the Whirlpool Galaxy. It will eventually be found to have a spiral structure, the first spiral galaxy discovered, and will be plotted at over 23 million light-years away. Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is penultimate (adjective) [pih-NUL-tuh-mut]. Penultimate means “occurring immediately before the last one,” or in other words, “next to last.” A formal adjective, it is always used before the noun it modifies. Penultimate isn’t the last word in words for things that are next to last. It has a pair of closely-related noun synonyms: penult and penultima. Although all three concern something that’s next to last, penult and penultima are usually a bit more specific; they are used most often to identify the next to last syllable of a word. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Monday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from Hubble Space Telescope namesake Edwin Hubble: “The history of astronomy is a history of receding horizons.” |
On a lighter note… I entered an astronomy contest the other day… …I didn’t come first but I did get a constellation prize. |
