WVBI COVID-19 Update for November 13, 2020

DATE: November 13, 2020

There are claims of voter fraud swirling in Traverse City after a viral video popped up with a claimed postal working saying he was ordered to change the postmark on ballots.  But, even if the claims were true, they wouldn’t matter because the ballots in question are said to have been delivered the day after the election and, in Michigan, no ballots arriving after 8 p-m on election day are counted, no matter what the post mark.  The Post Office inspector general is looking into allegations that post mark dates were altered, but it does not appear that the alleged events affected the election tallies.

This comes after problems in Antrim County where a software settings error resulted in erroneous reporting on election night, which has since been corrected. The Free Press has reported that, in that case, the County Clerk failed to update software used to collect information from individual voting machines to tabulate an unofficial count.  Many jurisdictions in Michigan use the same equipment and software that Antrim uses, so some have asked whether the same error happened elsewhere.  The Michigan Department of State said that didn’t happen and that if it had, it would have been caught in the bipartisan canvassing process that happens before results are declared official.  Still Michigan State Senators Lana Theis and To Barrett have asked Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for an election audit.  In addition to the Antrim County issues, they cite claims made in various election challenge lawsuits filed around the state. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has called those lawsuits baseless and frivolous. Regardless of their merit, it does not appear likely they will show enough irregularities to close the amount by which Trump trails Biden, which is now 150,000 votes.

In COVID-19 news, Michigan Hospitals continue to express concern about rising pressure on them from the spike in cases. Michigan News Connections Mary Schuermann has the story.
