News Update

Community Calendar for Friday, November 13th, 2020

From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Friday, November 13th, 2020.

There are claims of voter fraud swirling in Traverse City after a viral video popped up with a claimed postal working saying he was ordered to change the postmark on ballots.  But, even if the claims were true, they wouldn’t matter because the ballots in question are said to have been delivered the day after the election and, in Michigan, no ballots arriving after 8 p-m on election day are counted, no matter what the post mark.  The Post Office inspector general is looking into allegations that post mark dates were altered, but it does not appear that the alleged events affected the election tallies.

This comes after problems in Antrim County where a software settings error resulted in erroneous reporting on election night, which has since been corrected. The Free Press has reported that, in that case, the County Clerk failed to update software used to collect information from individual voting machines to tabulate an unofficial count.  Many jurisdictions in Michigan use the same equipment and software that Antrim uses, so some have asked whether the same error happened elsewhere.  The Michigan Department of State said that didn’t happen and that if it had, it would have been caught in the bipartisan canvassing process that happens before results are declared official.  Still Michigan State Senators Lana Theis and To Barrett have asked Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson for an election audit.  In addition to the Antrim County issues, they cite claims made in various election challenge lawsuits filed around the state. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has called those lawsuits baseless and frivolous. Regardless of their merit, it does not appear likely they will show enough irregularities to close the amount by which Trump trails Biden, which is now 150,000 votes.

In COVID-19 news, Michigan Hospitals continue to express concern about rising pressure on them from the spike in cases. Michigan News Connections Mary Schuermann has the story.

State health officials reported 6,940 new cases and 45 new deaths yesterday.  Average for new cases is now 5,488 a day and 56 for deaths. The number of active cases in the state is quickly approaching 100,000.  The state hasn’t updated its Safe Start data from yesterday. Average positive test rate statewide still shows as 10.7% with the daily new case rate at 403.5 per million.

In our region, there were 156 new cases and no deaths. Six of the new cases were in Charlevoix.  Otsego had 31, Emmet had 27, Antrim 19 and Grand Traverse 43. There are now 1,906 active cases in our 8 county region, which is averaging 110 new cases a day and 2 deaths a day.  Hospital bed occupancy rate in the Traverse Safe Start Region is at 67.6 percent.  82.6% of ICU beds in the region are occupied. 510 of 2040 hospitalized patients in the region are confirmed COVID-19 cases.

No change in data from the Health Center this morning.  They are awaiting results on nine tests with 225 run so far throughout the crisis.

Full county-by-county data for region are in today’s script online along with state, regional, U-P and Safe Start Zone totals, plus rolling averages and active case estimates.

Now, here’s what’s happening on your island…

Today, Arthritis Exercise Program is available up in the Hangout 10:30 to 11:30.  Just ask at the front desk. Social distancing and face masks are required.

Saturday— Pickleball is 10 to noon.  And on the big screen with the big sound, two movies are set for you.  4:00 show is The Good Dinosaur from Disney and Pixar.  It’s the story of an unlikely friendship with lots of fun for kids and grownups. Rated PG.  At 7:00, you thought the Coronavirus was bad?  Well, watch out for the poofs.  A young couple decides to take a week break from online only to find themselves out in the woods in the middle of an alien invasion.  This one’s for the grownups with an R rating.  Lots of fun and a slew of awards. Concession stand will be open for both shows—for snacks, a meal or both.  Pizza and hot dogs are on the menu along with all your favorite movie treats including soft pretzels and popcorn. Trailers are on the BIC Center website at BIC Center dot org.

Sunday, services at Holy Cross and the Christian Church, plus don’t forget the Christmas Bazaar on Sunday from 11 to 2:30.  It will be COVID-19 safe with social distancing, masks required and a limit on the number of folks inside at any one time.

And, as we get into the Christmas spirit, C-O-A has an operation Christmas Card to send cards to deployed troops.  You can pick cards up at the County Building nine to noon Monday through Friday, sign them, and then get them back by November 20th.  Call Lonnie for details at 2124.

Meeting planner for next week: School has an National Honor Society induction for new members next week, but only students, staff and family members can attend in person. Wednesday, the St. James Public Works Committee is meeting at 11 at the Township Hall. Thursday, Library Board meets at 9 at the Library and the Joint Telecommunications Advisory Committee meets at 4:30 at the BIC Center. More details and info on remote attendance, which is encouraged for all meetings, are in the calendar entries online.

And, the Wildlife Club says now is the time to sign up for the Big Buck Contest.  Do that at Powers Hardware. Entry fee is $20. Half of the proceeds go to the prize, the other half to the club to fund their projects. You must sign up before end of the day on the 14th and the Buck must be scored on Beaver Island by Deny Keehn. Contest runs through rifle and muzzle loading seasons.

[Don’t forget about the BIC Center W-V-B-I 2020 Raffle.  Go to raffle dot bic center dot org if you would like to get tickets.  Or get them at the BIC Center from desk.]

Water Temps: 42 at White Shoal and 49 at the mid-lake buoy southwest of Gull Island—with five foot waves out there this morning.

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports, but our WVBI virtual Octocopter high in the Beaver Island Skies spies lots of big bucks running for what hunters hope is virtual cover.   So, let’s be careful out there.

BIRTHDAYS:  Ron Gallageher is celebrating today, Fr. Pat Cawley and McKenna Turner tomorrow and Sue Welke on Sunday.  Happy Birthday to McKenna, Su, Father Pat and Ron, and if we missed you on our list, happy birthday to you from all of us at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center.

ON THIS DAY in 1956 the U-S Supreme Court rules racial segregation on buses illegal. In Browder v. Gayle, the Supreme Court strikes down Alabama laws requiring racial segregation on public buses. The high court rules these laws violate the 14th Amendment, which provides for equal protection under the law. The Montgomery Bus Boycott will end soon after the decision. Also on this day in 1982, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated in Washington, DC. Thousands of Vietnam War veterans march to the site and contemplate a wall of black granite sunk into the ground and etched with names of the more than 58,000 of their comrades killed in the war. (bing.com)

WORD OF THE DAY: farrier (noun) [FAIR-ee-er], which means: a person who shoes horses. Farrier is now usually applied specifically to a blacksmith who specializes in shoeing horses, a skill that requires not only the ability to shape and fit horseshoes, but also the ability to clean, trim, and shape a horse’s hooves. When farrier first appeared in English (as ferrour spelled F-E-R-R-O-U-R), it referred to someone who not only shoed horses, but who provided general veterinary care for them as well. Middle English ferrour was borrowed from the Anglo-French word of the same form, which referred to a blacksmith who shoes horses. That word derives from the verb ferrer (“to shoe horses”), which can ultimately be traced back to Latin ferrum, meaning “iron.”  (Merriam-Webster)

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Thursday…

Here’s a thought for the day from Rosa Parks who took a stand by sitting down on a Montgomery bus: “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.”

On a lighter note: I tried to write a joke about camouflage, but it doesn’t stand out.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar for Thursday, November 12th, 2020.  I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from the Langford Family WVBI Studios of the Voice of Beaver Island wishing you a great day and asking: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever?  And, thanks for listening.
