COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for February 24, 2021

Business leaders sent a letter to Governor Whitmer yesterday saying its time to let workers return to offices across the state.  Lost in all the other COVID-19 changes is the fact that anyone who can still work from home is required to do so by the Governor’s orders. The leaders say the continued restrictions are unnecessary and that they hurt central business districts and are having a tax impact—because those working from home in the suburbs don’t pay income and other taxes they would pay if they were at the office.  They also point out that health officials say that working in an office is less risky than many other activities now allowed by the governor.  So far, there is no reported response from the governor’s office.

COVID-19 data from the state continues to show downward trends. Yesterday’s report had 1,316 new cases 16 new deaths. There were also 18 reclassified deaths. Seven-day running average for new cases is 922. For deaths, the average is 31 a day–with reclassifications included. In the eight-county region we’ve followed from the start, there were 20 new cases and no deaths. Charlevoix two new cases. Seven day running averages for our region are 20 new cases a day and no deaths.

Statewide there are now 34,650. Our region has 726—with both counts headed own.

Statewide test positivity rate is at 3.5%, up one tenth.  It’s 3.5% in our safe start zone. That’s up five tenths. In Charlevoix we are at 1.6%, down two tenths and below that C-D-C target of 3% or less.  New case per million rates continue on a steady slope down.

Overall hospital occupancy rates look good—both statewide and in our safe start zone—essentially normal.  COVID-19 occupancy rates look good, too. Statewide, 3.7% of available beds are occupied with COVID-19 patients. For I-C-U beds, COVID occupancy is 6.6%.

There are no COVID-19 patients at Munson in Charlevoix and four at McLaren in Petoskey—all in their I-C-U.

On the island, two more new tests.  Those along with the one pending test are all back negative—so no tests pending. Last positive test was December 7th.

Complete data for our region plus summaries for the state, the T-C safe start zone and the U-P are in today’s script online.

Data from February 22, 2021

It seems that the reign of bizarre happens is going to continue in 2021. Last year we had flesh eating plants invading from Wisconsin, drone stalking Bald Eagles, and alligators on the loose downstate.  Now, it’s venomous spiders.  Three venomous spiders have attacked U of M’s main library and caused a temporary closure. No word on whether they are in cahoots with the flame thrower equipped squirrels from North Korea that attacked last year.
