COVID-19

WVBI COVID-19 Update for February 23, 2021

Michigan School officials had been pushing to skip M-Step tests this year, but that isn’t going to happen.  Biden administration education department officials say the tests must proceed.  For students still taking classes remotely, it’s unclear where the testing will occur. M-STEP tests are given to students in grades 3 to 8 and grade 11.  The results impact both schools and teachers.  The tests were cancelled last year as they were planned just after the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in school closures across the state.

There are fresh reports of COVID-19 vaccination scams in the news this morning. The recent calls have been in Oakland County with the callers first providing information about a vaccination appointment and then asking about personal financial info. Law enforcement officers and health department officials say a legitimate call would never ask for any info other than insurance.

COVID-19 data from the state continue to show good trends. Yesterday’s report covered Sunday and Monday and had an average of 742 cases a day and three total deaths statewide. Seven-day running average for new cases is 845. For deaths, the average is 29 a day–with reclassifications included. In the eight-county region we’ve followed from the start, there was an average of 19 new cases a day for the two-day period. There were no deaths. Charlevoix two new cases total. Seven day running averages for our region are 17 new cases a day and no deaths.

Statewide there are now 34,935 active cases—down by 673 over the two-day period. Our region has 754—up by 6—which is the first time that has happened in several months.

Statewide test positivity rate is at 3.4%, down two tenths.  It’s 3% in our safe start zone down six tenths and now at the C-D-C target. In Charlevoix we are at 1.8%, up six tenths, but below that C-D-C target of 3% or less.  New case per million rates continue on a steady slope down.

Overall hospital occupancy rates look good—both statewide and in our safe start zone—essentially normal.  COVID-19 occupancy rates look good, too. Statewide, 3.7% of available beds are occupied with COVID-19 patients. For I-C-U beds, COVID occupancy is 6.7%.

There are no COVID-19 patients at Munson in Charlevoix and four at McLaren in Petoskey—all in their I-C-U.

On the island, one new test.  It’s the only one pending. No new positives since December 7th. The health center dashboard suggests that 30 new tests were run and came back negative over the weekend or at some point last week, but we are assuming that’s a typo. We’ve asked for clarification.

Complete data for our region plus summaries for the state, the T-C safe start zone and the U-P are in today’s script online.
