Community Calendar Update

From studios in the BIC Center on America’s Emerald Isle, this is the WVBI Community Calendar for Monday, July 15th, 2019.
First some news…
Lot’s of folks came down to the Beaver Head Lighthouse yesterday afternoon for a Historical Society This Place Matters event. There was a pot luck lunch, music and an important announcement. We’ll get to that, but first some history. The Charlevoix City School District owned the Lighthouse property for many years and leased it to Networks Northwest to run the Beaver Island Lighthouse School. The school lost its funding and shut down several years ago and the property fell into decline. Charlevoix County Board Chairman Chris Christianson picks up the story from there…

The negotiations were protracted according to Charlevoix County administrator Kevin Shepard:

According to our County Board representative Nancy Ferguson, it was pressure from the island—and folks showing up at events at the light—that kept things on track.

Historical Society Executive Director Lori Taylor-Blitz says the easy part is done from her perspective. Now, the lighthouse has to be repaired and prepared for its next role on Beaver island, which will involve a lot of work for the Historical Society. Listen in this evening after our global news at five to hear more about that. Lori will be our guest on the show and talk about that and upcoming Museum Week Events.

WORD OF THE DAY nosegay; noun; ( NOHZ-gay); a small bunch of flowers Nosegay is a homegrown word—that is, it originated in English. 15th-century Middle English speakers joined nose (which meant then what it does today) with gay (which, at the time, meant “ornament”). That makes nosegay an appropriate term for a bunch of flowers, which is indeed an ornament that appeals to the nose. Today, the word nosegay is especially common in the bridal business, where it usually refers to a specific type of bouquet: a round, tight bunch of flowers as opposed to a cascading bouquet or other type of arrangement.
