Grand Traverse County is now officially a measles outbreak area, with three confirmed cases. That’s according to a press release issued yesterday by the county Health Department. They say there are no public exposure sites to be reported, but that those who are unvaccinated—especially young children—are at risk. Measles can linger in the air for hours and can be serious or even fatal. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, white spots on the inner cheeks and a rash of red spots. If you’re unsure about your immunization, contact your doctor or the Health Center. If you think you may have been exposed, you are asked to contact the health department to help stop further spread. There’s more info in the department’s press release linked in today’s script online. A plan to crack down on online ticket scalping is moving forward down in Lansing. The House passed a bill Tuesday—104 to 1—that bans the use of ticket-buying bots and imposes fines of up to $5,000 per ticket. Supporters say it gives the Attorney General tools to protect consumers. The measure now heads to the Senate. There was a full house last evening for the National Security Seminar at the BIC Center, Tom Ehrhard and John Manza led a wide-ranging discussion that covered recent events in the Middle East, policy in Ukraine and a look at how U-S strategy is developed. Now, here’s a look at events happening on your Emerald Isle… First your meeting planner. A-A meets Thursday and Saturday at 6:00. All of those are at the Christian Church. On the fun front today… Wednesday, Summer Yoga at the BIC Center is on today at 9:30 with a restorative session. The library has plenty going on. There’s Kids Storytime, Crafts and Art for three years and up at 10:00 and then for 10 years and up at 11:00. At the BIC Center, there’s Bingo at 1:00 in the Hangout at the BIC Center. At 3:00 C-O-A has Fun & Gamers out at Peaine Township Hall. At 7:00, there’s BINGO at the Gregg Fellowship Center. Doors open at 6:15 for fellowship. And, at 8 out at C-M-U, there’s a presentation on Biodiversity Conservation in the Beaver Island Archipelago: A Collaborative Effort Between the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians and Michigan Natural Features Inventory. Bill Parsons and Josh Cohen will be presenting. Thursday, at 10:00 there’s a lot going on: Pickleball is outdoors on the Peaine Township Courts, Tai Chi in the Hangout at the BIC Center, C-O-A Cardio Drumming is on out at the Peaine Township Hall and Women’s Bible Study is at the Christian Church. Again, all of those events starting at 10:00. Thursday afternoon at 4:30, drop by Bay North Realty’s new office on King’s Highway just down the way from the school for a grand opening celebration. There’ll be music on the porch—bring your instrument to join in—plus drinks and appetizers. The event will run to 6:30. In our dark sky, after sunset, the very thin waxing crescent moon will hang above the western horizon and will lie between Mercury and Pollux. Highlights for the rest of the week include… Friday, there’s Senior + Vets Coffee + Donuts at the BIC Center from 9:00 to 11:00. Also at the BIC Center, Chair Strength Training in the Hangout at 9:00 and Basic Flow Yoga at 9:30 in the Theater. And the C-O-A has a Walkersize walk from Heritage Park to the St. James Campground and back. Friday evening the BIC Center stage comes alive with theater as the C-M-U Summer Theater Program kicks off a two-night run. On stage Friday is the comedy Plotters. It’s grave business as a clandestine cabal of misfits attempt their ultimate heist. Will these agents of the night seize the coveted prize – or bury themselves? Then Saturday evening it’s the beloved musical You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. Follow Charlie Brown and the entire Peanuts gang as they explore life’s great questions as they play baseball, struggle with homework, sing songs, swoon over their crushes and celebrate the joy of friendship. On this day in 1953, 18-year-old Al Kaline made his debut with the Detroit Tigers—just days after graduating high school. Signed as a “bonus baby,” he had to stay on the roster for two years under MLB rules. By 1955, he was a star, leading the league with a .340 average—and never spent a day in the minors. He spent his entire career with the Tigers—22seasons in all—and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is flotsam (noun) [FLAHT-sum], which refers to the floating pieces that remain after a shipwreck, or more broadly to any floating debris or wreckage. It is also used figuratively to refer to miscellaneous or unimportant material, often in the phrase “flotsam and jetsam.” English speakers started using flotsam, jetsam, and lagan as legal terms in the 16th and 17th centuries. The three words were used to establish claims of ownership of the three types of seaborne, vessel-originated goods they named. Flotsam was anything from a shipwreck, and jetsam and lagan were items thrown overboard to reduce the cargo weight of a ship. Lagan was distinguished from jetsam by having a buoy attached so the goods could be found if they sank. In the 19th century, when flotsam and jetsam took on extended meanings, they developed synonymous applications and are today often paired, lagan having mostly been left at sea. |
