Top leaders at the Michigan State Police are under fire after troopers overwhelmingly voted “no confidence” in their leadership. A joint survey by two police associations found over 98% of troopers and 90% of command officers lack confidence in Col. James Grady and Lt. Col. Aimee Brimacombe. Republicans in Lansing are calling for their resignations, citing low morale and misconduct allegations. Governor Whitmer is standing by Grady, calling his leadership “strong and steady.” MSP has more than 1,800 enlisted members across the state. Over in Lake County, the long-shuttered North Lake Correctional Facility in Baldwin is preparing to reopen—this time as one of the nation’s largest ICE detention centers. Operator GEO Group plans to hire up to 500 people, a big deal in Michigan’s poorest county. But locals are skeptical. The prison has opened and closed several times over the years, depending on federal contracts. While some welcome the jobs, others worry it’s another short-term fix—and question the long-term cost to their community. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service tightened rules on a pipeline permit through Hartwick Pines State Park to protect nesting Kirtland’s warblers. The rare songbird, once endangered, breeds only in select jack pine forests. New language requires the pipeline company to get approval for work near habitat areas—including pesticide use and truck access. Kirtland’s Warbler contemplates additional protection for its up north habitat. Photo from interlochenpublicradio.org |

And in our Dark Skies, assuming it is clear, tonight will be a great night for summer constellation view. Look for Arcturus high in the east, noticeable for its brightness and yellow-orange color. Next, look for Vega rather low in the northeast. It’s a bright blue-white star. Then look for the Northern Crown between these 2 bright stars. It’s a bit closer to Arcturus. Plus, look for Mars, which will pass almost next to Regulus tonight in the West starting around 11:00 p.m. While they are roughly the same brightness, notice the color difference. Regulus shines with a bluish light and Mars is a steady reddish light. There’s more at Dark Sky Island dot org. Tuesday, there’s Chair Strength Training at the BIC Center at 9:00. On this day in 1796, The British finally decided to surrender Detroit to the United States. Despite the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American War for Independence, the British chose to retain the Territory of Michigan until June 11, 1796, when General Anthony Wayne and an American Army marched into Detroit.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is debilitating (adjective) [dih-BILL-uh-tay-ting], a formal word used to describe things that seriously impair strength or the ability to function. An adjective that takes the form of a verb, debilitating dates to the mid-17th century, making it the youngest of a trio: its source, the verb debilitate (“to impair the strength of”), dates to the early 16th century, and the noun debility (“weakness, infirmity”) has been in use since the 15th century. All come from the Latin word for “weak,” debilis [day-BEE-liss]. |

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from General Anthony Wayne, who took the Michigan Territory from the British: “Issue the orders, sir, and I will storm hell!” |
|
On a lighter note… What religion do they practice in Hell? Crispianity. |
