News Update

Community Calendar Report for, Tuesday, June 10th, 2025

More than two months after a historic ice storm caused an estimated $137 million in damage across Northern Michigan, the state is still waiting for Presidential approval of a federal disaster declaration. Senators Gary Peters and Elissa Slotkin, along with Representative Jack Bergman, are pushing for approval of Michigan’s Small Business Administration disaster request. The March ice storm damaged 3 million acres of forest and devastated local businesses, with almost all Emmet and Charlevoix County businesses experiencing disruption. The declaration was first requested by Governor Whitmer on May 16. If approved, it would provide SBA disaster loans to affected businesses, homeowners, and nonprofits in seven Northern Michigan counties, including support for the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians.

The Charlevoix Historical Society is launching a major restoration project for the city’s iconic South Pier Lighthouse that Island ferry passengers pass by on every trip. The $140,000 effort will repair paint deterioration and corrosion caused by industrial residue from the lighthouse’s 1948 construction. Nearly $80,000 in grant funding will support the work, which includes removing mill scale, repainting with marine-grade materials, and lead abatement. Work is expected to begin this fall.

Castle Farms is bringing back concerts after decades as just a wedding venue. The iconic Charlevoix stone castle, which hosted rock legends like Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, and AC/DC in the 70s and 80s, kicked off its concert revival over the weekend with local 80s cover band Derailed. The new shows will feature limited capacity and a community-first approach, with both legendary musicians and local talent expected.

If you were counting on ChatGPT to write that last-minute report or Facebook post for you, there’s bad news this morning. ChatGPT is down.  The outage has affected users globally, with both free and Plus subscribers experiencing problems. Time for Plan B.

In Island News, the Beaver Island Association in collaboration with the townships formed Joint Telecommunications Advisory Committee, which your reporter chairs, have a community meeting on broadband planned for Thursday.  It’s part of work under a 43-thousand dollar grant awarded to the B-I-A to further develop a plan for a project to bring fiber-based internet service to Island homes and business. Dick Mulvihill, who is spearheading the project for the B-I-A says that the meeting will bring folks up to date on the project and help collect valuable input necessary to complete the plan. He says Islanders may be surprised, but the current projections show it is possible to deliver improved service at lower costs for most Islanders. “We had been thinking about fiber-based service as necessary to keep up with and be competitive with the mainland,” Mulvihill said. “While that’s still true, our work so far shows that a community owned system could provide better service at lower costs.” The meeting is set for Thursday at 5:30 at the BIC Center.

Finally in our Island news, a couple of reminders…

If you are a quilter or textile artist, the Beaver Island Gallery would like to hear from you.  They want to see if there is enough interest to run a third annual Quilt Show at the gallery sometime in August. They ask that you contact Linda McDonough at 231-330-4156 so they can make plans.

If you use DirecTV and need any service work done, they have a tech coming to the Island this week. Call 517-730-3921 to set up an appointment.

NAME OF DAY: The BIC Center Name of the Day is Dom.  If that’s your name, come on into the BIC Center today to pick out a free drink of your choice.

BIRTHDAYS: Brett Maudrie is celebrating today Happy Birthday to Brett and, if we missed you on the list, Happy Birthday to you too from everyone at WVBI and your Beaver Island Community Center!

TRAFFIC: No delays inbound or outbound to the airports. The island beltway is running smoothly with no bridge delays.  Still, let’s be careful out there…especially around the school zone

On this day in 1935, Dr. Bob Smith has a beer to calm himself before performing surgery, and thanks to the help of his new friend Bill Wilson, it will be his final drink of alcohol. The fellow alcoholics have come together to kick their addiction, and their collaboration will form Alcoholics Anonymous. Also, on this day in 1977, Apple Computer Inc. ships its Apple II computer. The first in a long line of related computers, the original model cost $1,298 and came with 4KB of RAM (upgradeable to 48KB) and had sound and color graphics.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is minutia (noun) [muh-NOO-shee-uh], which refers to a small or minor detail. It is usually used in its plural form minutiae [muh-noo-she-aye]. We’ll try not to bore you with the minor details of minutia; it’ll only take a minute! Minutia was borrowed into English in the 18th century from the Latin plural noun minutiae [mee-noot-tee-aye], meaning “trifles” or “details,” which comes from the singular noun minutia [mee noo-tee-ah], meaning “smallness.” The Latin minutia, incidentally, comes from minutus [muh-noo-toos] (also the ancestor of the familiar English word minute), an adjective meaning “small.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday

Here’s a thought for the day from Apple II co-creator Steve Jobs: “The most precious thing that we all have with us is time.”

On a lighter note…

The pub is ten minutes from my house…

However, my house is two hours from the pub…
