President Trump returned to Macomb County Tuesday to mark his first 100 days back in office, rallying more than 1,000 supporters at Macomb Community College. He touted economic progress, promised new jobs for Michigan through defense manufacturing, and announced fighter jets would be stationed at Selfridge Air Base. Trump also vowed support for the auto industry by easing tariffs and slammed Democrats for opposing his border policies. He dismissed new impeachment efforts from Detroit Congressman Shri Thanedar and repeated claims he won Michigan three times. Earlier in the day he appeared with Governor Whitmer, praising her for work in securing the future of Selfridge Air Force Base where retiring A-10 fighters will be replaced with F-15s. Without it, you could be turned away at airport security unless you have a passport or other TSA-approved ID. If you show up without one, you’ll face extra screening—and if TSA can’t confirm your identity, you won’t be allowed to board your flight. A month after the devastating ice storm in Northern Michigan, volunteers with the Little Traverse Conservancy are still clearing fallen trees and debris from trails and nature preserves. The group opened storm debris drop-off sites, including the Offield Family Viewlands, and continues posting trail updates online to help residents safely enjoy the outdoors. In Emmet County, debris from the ice storm is being turned into biomass fuel. Piles of downed trees and branches collected at local drop-off sites are now being ground up and sent to facilities like NorthStar Clean Energy, where they’re burned to generate electricity. The biomass powers up to 38,000 homes, turning storm damage into renewable energy instead of landfill waste — a cleaner solution to a messy disaster. |

On this day in 1916 Claude Shannon is born in Gaylord, Michigan. Known as the inventor of information theory, Shannon is the first to use the word “bit.” Shannon, a contemporary of Alan Turing, sets the stage for the recognition of the basic theory of information that could be processed by the machines the other pioneers developed. He investigates information distortion, redundancy and noise, and provides a means for information measurement. He identifies the bit as the fundamental unit of both data and computation. Also, on this day in 1803 the U-S makes the Louisiana Purchase. For 15 million dollars President Jefferson vastly expands a young nation gaining 828,000 square miles of land stretching across much of North America. And, on this day in 1824, Congress appropriates $10,000 to survey a road between Detroit and Chicago. The Territorial Road or Great Sauk Trail is now U-S 12. Image from Americaninsights.org |
Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is Insouciance (noun) [in-SOO-see-unss], a formal word that refers to a feeling of carefree unconcern. The song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin is an ode to cheerful insouciance if ever there was one, what with its lyrics entirely concerned with being entirely unconcerned, remaining trouble-free in the face of life’s various stressors and calamities. Such carefree nonchalance is at the heart of insouciance, which arrived in English (along with the adjective insouciant), from French, in the 1800s. The French word comes from a combining of the negative prefix in- with the verb soucier, meaning “to trouble or disturb.” The easiness and breeziness of insouciance isn’t always considered beautiful, however, as it can also mean lack of concern for serious matters in a way that is more careless than carefree. |
Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Wednesday… |
Here’s a thought for the day from jazz great Charlie Parker who on this day in 1941 has his first commercial recording session at Decca Records in Dallas: “Don’t be afraid, just play the music.” |
On a lighter note… How many sax players does it take to change a light bulb? Fixty. One to change the bulb and forty-nine to say Charlie Parker would have done it better. |
