Community Calendar Report for Tuesday, April 29th, 2025

President Donald Trump returns to Macomb County this today, marking the 100th day of his second term with a campaign-style rally Tuesday at Macomb Community College. The 6 p.m. speech is billed as a celebration of Trump’s early achievements, including lower inflation, increased deportations, and deep spending cuts. But the results in Michigan are mixed—unemployment is up, EV policies are in flux, and tariffs have rattled the auto industry. Trump’s visit also highlights his push to expand Selfridge Air Base and tackle Asian carp in the Great Lakes.

If you’ve been treated at one of the Ascension Health hospitals downstate, your personal data may have been compromised in a recent data breach. Ascension is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection. The breach affected facilities in Michigan and several other states after patient info was exposed through a third-party vendor. You should receive a notice by mail if your data was breached, but there’s a number in today’s script to call to check.
Call 866-408-3556 for more details and to see if you’re impacted.

If you’re heading downstate today, be alert—forecasters say a strong cold front could trigger severe storms in southeast Michigan. The National Weather Service warns of large hail and damaging winds up to 60 mph, especially between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Cities like Detroit, Ann Arbor and Flint are in the risk zone. Storms could shift east, but travelers should watch for updates.

On this day in 2004 On April 29, 2004 the final Oldsmobile drives off the line at General Motors’ Lansing Car Assembly plant. The dark cherry Alero sedan is the send-off to a nameplate founded in the city more than a century ago by the son of a machinist. It is a bitter farewell tempered by the promise of new car industry jobs in Lansing for years to come in the form of new plants making other GM brands. GM now has four nameplates, all of which have at least one vehicle built in Lansing: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is

Furtive (adjective) [FER-tiv], which describes something that is done in a quiet and secret way to avoid being noticed. It can also mean “expressive of stealth” or “sly” (as in “a furtive look”), or “obtained underhandedly” (as in “furtive gains”). When first used in written English in the early 1600s, furtive meant “done by stealth.” It later adopted the less common meaning “stolen” or “obtained underhandedly.” Whichever meaning you choose, the word has a fittingly elusive ancestry, either stepping into English via the French furtif or coming directly from that word’s ancestor, the Latin furtivus, itself a descendent of fur, meaning “thief.”

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday

Here’s a thought for the day from Nancy Wake, a British agent who dropped behind enemy lines in France on this date in 1944: “Each of us has a fire in our hearts for something. It’s our goal in life to find it and to keep it lit.”

On a lighter note…

What’s the opposite of a news van?

An Oldsmobile.

That’s the W-V-B-I Community Calendar Report for this Beaver Island Tuesday, April 29th, 2025. I’m Kevin Boyle reporting from W-V-B-I’s Langford Family Studios wishing you a great day and asking you: why not go ahead and make it the best day ever? And thanks for listening.
