First some news… Downstate, Federal agents say two 20-year-old men from Dearborn plotted a terror attack targeting LGBTQ+ bars in Ferndale. Prosecutors say Momed Ali and Majed Mahmoud practiced with high-powered weapons, stockpiled ammunition, and were inspired by ISIS extremism. The FBI uncovered encrypted chats and seized rifles, vests, and cameras. Both men face terrorism-related gun charges and remain in custody. Meantime, the FBI now says the September 28th attack on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc was a targeted hate crime driven by the shooter’s anti-Mormon beliefs. Investigators say Thomas Jacob Sanford killed four people and injured nine before being shot by police. The FBI confirms his motive stemmed from hostility toward the Mormon faith. On the Island, the Tunes Music program has opened their own space after launching their music education program at the school and BIC Center. Called the Tunes Music Studio, it’s in the old real estate office next to the Hardware. Funding for the project came from C-#-F and some anonymous donors. Lesson start there in January.
The new Tunes Music Studio will begin offering lessons in January. Image from Tunes video on Facebook North Central Michigan College has been named one of just 200 schools eligible for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence — the nation’s top honor for two-year colleges. The recognition highlights NCMC’s strong student success, retention, and transfer rates. President David Roland Finley says the naming affirms the college’s mission to create pathways to opportunity for every student. Winners will be announced in 2027.

He submitted his resignation October 28 and will leave office December 16. He says it’s simply the right time for him and his family. On the Old Mission Peninsula, a group of wineries is offering a settlement after winning nearly $50 million in damages against Peninsula Township over unconstitutional zoning rules. The Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula say they want clear regulations for outdoor events, noise, and capacity limits — not just money. They argue updated rules will help small farms stay viable. The township could take up the proposal within the next few weeks. In T-C, Grand Traverse County is exploring a partnership with North Sky Raptor Sanctuary to build a new wildlife rehabilitation and education center at Camp Greilick. The Traverse Ticker says plans include bird enclosures, a flight pen, trails, and public programs. North Sky, now based in Interlochen, treats injured birds from 29 counties and could bring its successful rehab and education work to a larger audience. |

On this date in 1907, Russian immigrant brothers Ben and Perry Feigenson launch a new line of pop in Detroit — made from their own cake frosting recipes. Their first flavors: grape, fruit punch, and strawberry, later known as Redpop. Because “Feigenson” wouldn’t fit on a bottle, they shortened it to “Faygo.” The brand grows alongside the city — advertised at Tiger games, loved by locals, and even celebrated by the hip hop band Insane Clown Posse who include “Faygo showers” as part of their live shows. Now owned by National Beverage, Faygo is still made in Detroit — where it remains pop… not soda.

Our Merriam Webster Word of the Day is spontaneous (adjective) [spahn-TAY-nee-us]. It means doing or saying something naturally, suddenly, and without planning. A spontaneous person acts in the moment, simply because it feels right. The word comes from the Latin sponte, meaning “of one’s free will.” English philosopher Thomas Hobbes used it back in 1654 to describe voluntary actions — things we do by our own choice. Today, it’s the spark behind unplanned adventures, sudden laughter, and moments that just happen. |

Now, to wrap up for this Beaver Island Tuesday… |
|
Here’s a thought for the day from long-time C-B-S news anchor Walter Cronkite, who was born on this day in 1916: “The profession of journalism ought to be about telling people what they need to know – not what they want to know.” |
|
On a lighter note… What did Winnie the Pooh say to his agent? “Show me the honey!” |
